R.I.P😭: DEATH WHY? Two Liverpool senior players died in a plane crash this morning on their way to international duty – this is coming from JURGEN KLOPP
The renowned midfielder triumphed against adversity to establish himself as one of the most exceptional players in history and the ideal representative that United could have aspired for.
The demise of Sir Bobby Charlton, aged 86, was solemnly conveyed by Manchester United’s social media staff with the statement “Words will never be enough.” It was an apt description of the life of the magnificent midfielder, who had just escaped death, endured excruciating suffering, and subsequently returned to guide his side to victory in European competition and motivate England to win the World Cup.
Charlton was born in 1937 in Ashington, a mining hamlet in Northumberland. He later settled in Manchester and had great success in the world of football, ultimately being the highest-scoring player in the history of both his club and his national team. During the last years of his life, he enjoyed and took pride in United’s numerous achievements, making him the ideal spokesman for the club.
However, the narration of his life’s journey must inevitably commence with its most astonishing and crucial event, which took place on the frosty airstrip at Munich-Riem Airport on February 6, 1958.
The article continues below.
Tribute to the Munich Air Disaster by Manchester United
“Why am I the one who should be chosen?”
Charlton, who was 20 years old at the time, was one of the youngest players in the United team. They were returning to Manchester from Belgrade after securing their spot in the semi-finals of the European Cup. Their aircraft made a halt in Munich to replenish its gasoline, and following two unsuccessful efforts to depart, it collided with the runway, resulting in the unfortunate demise of 23 individuals. Charlton was the final individual who remained alive and was located, still securely fastened into his seat, when he was discovered at a distance of 40 yards from the wreckage of the aircraft.
Charlton sustained a severe laceration to his head and was promptly transported to the hospital. Upon awakening the following day, the individual lying in the adjacent bed perused a paper detailing the incident and proceeded to recite a distressing enumeration of the deceased, which Charlton subsequently characterized as a “terrible roll call.” Out of the group, eight individuals were Charlton’s teammates, while three were his closest companions: Eddie Coleman, David Pegg, and Tommy Taylor.
Charlton, in contrast to some of his teammates who managed to survive, did not have any fractures, but the emotional wounds persisted throughout his entire life. Despite his ability to resume playing just one month after the accident, he had contemplated altogether withdrawing from the game.
“I was involved in the horror in many ways, but I also felt strangely disconnected,” Charlton stated in his memoirs. “I felt as though I was detached from my body, silently experiencing a distressing dream that I couldn’t intervene in or break free from.”
“I pondered, ‘Why was I chosen?'” For what reason am I present in this place with only a minor laceration on my head, when all of my companions have perished? I perceived the situation as unjust, questioning the reason for it being imposed on me. The occurrence was of significant significance, as numerous young individuals perished just before attaining the imminent triumph that awaited them, and I was unable to comprehend the reason behind it. We departed. After a few days, you comprehended the magnitude of the event, prompting you to contemplate your fortunate circumstances. I was incredibly fortunate.
