Real Madrid decided on Carlo Ancelotti’s future after the Italian’s season got off to a rough start.

Yesterday night, the reigning European champions lost to Milan 3-1 at the Bernabeu in the Champions League, their third straight loss. This follows a disgraceful couple of weeks for the squad, in which Real Madrid faced harsh criticism for failing to win the Ballon d’Or after Vinicius Jr. and Barcelona crushed them 4-0 in the El Clasico in Madrid.

The 65-year-old Ancelotti has been struggling since Kylian Mbappe was signed, so President Florentino Perez has finally decided on his future.

It is anticipated that Xabi Alonso would succeed Carlo Ancelotti as manager of Real Madrid.

Florentino Perez

Florentino Perez has made the decision to release Ancelotti.

FourFourTwo currently ranks Ancelotti, who has two stints in Spanish football, as the second-best manager in the world.

The Italian was fired in what many seen as a harsh dismissal the season after winning the Champions League in his first season as Real Madrid’s head coach in 2013. But Ancelotti returned in 2021 and has since won two more titles with Old Big Ears.

However, the German newspaper BILD claims that Ancelotti won’t be removed until the current campaign is over.

According to the source, even though Ancelotti is protected “from an immediate dismissal,” he will not finish out the remaining year of his contract, which expires next summer, because Perez thinks Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is the most qualified candidate to lead Madrid’s struggling “mega squad.”

BILD also notes that two Germans are to blame for Ancelotti’s issues. After the Italian abruptly lost the former World Cup winner in the summer after he announced his retirement following the Euros, Real Madrid has struggled to replace the dynamic presence of Toni Kroos in midfield. Hansi Flick of Barcelona is also held accountable for Ancelotti’s downfall, as the Clasico is said to have been a turning point in Perez’s animosity against his current manager.

The source claims that in the second half of the season, a deal with Xabi Alonso to take over might be achieved. According to the Spanish newspaper Fichajes, Leverkusen’s top choice to replace the Basque in the Bundesliga is Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

Why Manchester United Had to Fire Erik Ten Hag

Since the previous season, Alonso has been Real Madrid’s top pick, according to FourFourTwo. A potential opening at Real Madrid or Manchester City in 2025 most likely prompted his surprising decision to remain with the unbeatable winners from the previous season.

Alonso can choose to join Liverpool, Bayern Munich, or Real Madrid, but the Bernabeu might be the only suitable location among the three. His contract with Bayer Leverkusen expires in 2026.
