Report: Florian Wirtz may rejoin Leverkusen right after Liverpool’s upcoming game.

Less than two months after becoming Liverpool’s record acquisition, Florian Wirtz may return to Leverkusen the following week.

Liverpool supporters were excited about the German midfielder’s possible impact on the squad as he moved from Bayer 04 to the Premier League winners on June 20 for £116 million. International teammate Ilkay Gundogan has hailed him as one of the best in the world.

Wirtz didn’t have a suitable chance to bid Leverkusen supporters farewell because of the timing of his departure, but plans are in place to make amends.

Leverkusen Arranges Wirtz’s Official Farewell

Sport.de reports that next Tuesday, when Bayer Leverkusen plays Serie A newcomers Pisa in a friendly at the BayArena, they will formally bid Wirtz farewell. According to sources, Wirtz and the club are both keen for him to have a final opportunity to say goodbye to the fans, particularly since he was unable to do so at the end of the previous campaign due to uncertainties surrounding his future.

The farewell is set for the day following Liverpool’s dual match against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield. For this event, Leverkusen has asked Liverpool to permit Wirtz to skip Tuesday and Wednesday’s training.

Liverpool has not yet determined whether to allow Wirtz to say goodbye at his old club.

A Challenging Time for Liverpool

It makes sense that Wirtz would want to bid the BayArena faithful farewell after going from a youthful phenom to a worldwide celebrity over his five years at Leverkusen, where he was instrumental in their undefeated domestic double in 2023–2024.

But it wouldn’t be ideal for him to miss two training days so near the beginning of the Community Shield and Premier League season as a Liverpool player.

Luis Diaz, Sadio Mane, and Adam Lallana are just a few of the adored players who have departed Liverpool in recent years without having the opportunity to say goodbye in a meaningful way at Anfield.

Wirtz is expected to be granted permission by the club to visit Germany if he is keen to thank Leverkusen and skipping practice wouldn’t seriously interfere with Liverpool’s preseason preparations.

It’s understandable that Bayer 04 supporters would want to bid farewell to one of their greatest players, who they hope would one day become as legendary among Liverpool supporters.
