Following his goal in his England debut against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday, Roy Keane has brought future son-in-law Taylor Harwood-Bellis back to earth.

The Southampton defender scored a dream goal in the Three Lions’ 5-0 thumping of Ireland at Wembley to win his first senior call-up for the Nations League doubleheader in November. After taking Kyle Walker’s place in the 62nd minute, Harwood-Bellis scored 17 minutes later after headed the ball back across goal and into the bottom corner after meeting Jude Bellingham’s exquisite cross.

When asked about his objective, Harwood-Bellis, who is engaged to Keane’s daughter Leah Keane, had a usual response. “It’s nearly as good as Kane’s goal,” stated former Ireland midfielder Keane. I find this to be bittersweet,” he said, analysing the video of Harwood-Bellis’ thunderous header.

The Manchester United veteran quipped, “It’s not done and dusted yet!” in response to broadcaster Mark Pougatch informing viewers who were not aware that Harwood-Bellis was Keane’s future son-in-law. “Hey, things can change in the Keane household very quickly.”

Keane then chose to commend Harwood-Bellis for Southampton’s season-opening performance. “He has had a goal threat in the past few months, even while playing for Southampton, and it’s good for him,” he continued. He is a terrific kid, his family does a fantastic job, and he is a bit of a goal threat, so it’s good for him to make his debut.”

Before the game, Harwood-Bellis discussed his tight relationship with Keane, saying: “It’s something that is good and I take a lot of advice.”

Harwood-Bellis, a former centre-back for Manchester City, joined Southampton on a season-long loan last summer after being promoted from the Championship with Burnley in 2022–2023.

Before the Saints’ return to the Premier League, he signed a permanent contract with Russell Martin’s team and helped lead them to victory over Leeds in the play-off final.

Harwood-Bellis has been crucial to Southampton’s victory over Everton earlier this month, and he has improved as the season has progressed after a challenging start.

Last week, Lee Carsley gave Harwood-Bellis his first call-up as he advanced through the age groups with England. Harwood-Bellis was not used as a replacement against Greece, but he was given the chance to shine against Ireland, and he made the most of it.
