Liverpool will play Newcastle United at Anfield on New Year’s Day in an effort to maintain their Premier League advantage.
Liverpool surged to the top of the table on Boxing Day after defeating Burnley 2-0. And they remained there until previous leaders Arsenal fell to West Ham United 2-0 at home two days later.
Arsenal can regain the lead if they overcome Fulham on Sunday. Liverpool would still ensure that they start 2024 atop the league even with three points at home against a faltering Newcastle squad that has lost six of its last seven games in all competitions.
Ahead of the big game, we also look at the latest injury bulletins from both teams in our morning Liverpool FC digest.

Liverpool will be attempting to maintain their top spot in the Premier League standings as they prepare to meet Newcastle United on New Year’s Day. The Reds took the league lead after defeating Burnley on Boxing Day, and they were able to maintain it when Arsenal fell to West Ham 2-0 on Thursday.
Despite an increasing number of injuries, Liverpool is still a contender for the title. Important players Andy Robertson and Alexis Mac Allister have both been ruled out due to injury; during his news conference to discuss Newcastle’s visit, Klopp gave an update on their respective recoveries.
The full narrative can be found at Jake Bayliss, along with updates on Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago Alcantara.
The Reds’ three main injury concerns are Joel Matip, Ben Doak, and Kostas Tsimikas.
Eddie Howe assesses Liverpool’s threat while providing an update on Newcastle United’s injuries.
Eddie Howe has said that Newcastle United needs to be “near-perfect” in order to have any chance of defeating Liverpool on New Year’s Day.
The Reds have triumphed over Newcastle in all five of their previous meetings, most memorably in August at St. James’ Park when they overturned a 10-man deficit to win an exciting comeback. Drama also abounded in the clubs’ previous meeting at Anfield, with emotions building on both benches until Fabio Carvalho’s game-winning goal in the 98th minute left the visitors furiously unhappy.
Given Newcastle’s terrible play—the Magpies have won just once in their past seven games—Liverpool are the obvious favourites to win again. Howe, though, is eager to stop more pain with this installation.
Nevertheless, the Newcastle boss might be without as many as nine players for Monday night’s game at Anfield due to injuries to Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, Jamaal Lascelles, Joe Willock, Elliot Anderson, Javier Manquillo, and Matt Targett. Sandro Tonali, meantime, has been barred for violating the wagering guidelines.
Before their match against Liverpool, Howe also gave an update on Barnes, Lascelles, and Willock.

The “beautiful & fresh” bedding from Dunelm that “needs no ironing” is now only £7.
On Boxing Day, a dress that “skims the body” from Marks & Spencer is discounted to £20.
