It has been disclosed that Tottenham has communicated their desire to be referred to by a different name to the broadcasters of the Premier League through a letter that they have just sent.

Frequently, the club is referred to as a shortened version of their official full name, which is Tottenham Hotspur. This is a common practice among many clubs in the Premier League and the English Football League.

This is something that can be seen in a number of other instances, both in the Premier League and further down the pyramid. By way of illustration, West Bromwich Albion is frequently referred to as West Brom, whereas Queens Park Rangers is commonly referred to as QPR.

Tottenham is frequently referred to as “Tottenham” or “Spurs” in televised broadcasts and in the wider media; however, their full name is something that is referred to much less frequently.

Now, the north London club has stated that they want that to change in a letter that was addressed to Premier League broadcasters. The letter was seen and reported by The Athletic.

The club has expressed a desire to be referred to as “Tottenham Hotspur” or simply Spurs, and they have requested that any references to “Tottenham” be removed from any future coverage.

This is what the letter says: “Tottenham Hotspur has provided clarification regarding the name of the club.”

It has been requested by them that the club be primarily known as Tottenham Hotspur, with Spurs being the preferred short form of the name.

A brand document that was presented by the club in November reads as follows: “In a world full of Uniteds, Citys, and Rovers, there is only one Hotspur, Tottenham Hotspur.”

According to the information provided, another reason is to prevent the perception that the term “Tottenham” refers solely to the neighbourhood of Tottenham, rather than to the football club known as “Tottenham Hotspur as a whole.”

It is a fact that there is no other team in English football that bears the same name as Tottenham Hotspur. This is true at least as far down as the upper reaches of the amateur game. Fans would have to travel to Malta or Wales if they wanted to watch another team with the same name compete.

Since the year 1990, Holyhead Hotspur has been the team that has been representing the town of the same name in Wales. On the other hand, there are two different teams in Malta that use the name ending.
