The EFL is criticized by Gary Lineker for Sheffield Wednesday’s point punishment, but Alan Shearer admits the Owls

Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker, two former England strikers, have spoken their opinions about Sheffield Wednesday entering administration for the first time in their history.

Gary Lineker, a former broadcaster of Match of the Day, disagrees with the English Football League’s decision to dock Sheffield Wednesday 12 points following their administration last week.

Dejphon Chansiri gave up ownership of the club last Friday, allowing it and Sheffield 3 Limited, the business that owns Hillsborough, to go into administration after years of poor management and several months of financial turmoil.

Wednesday received a 12-point deduction from the EFL as a result, and after just 12 games, they are currently 16 points from safety and at the bottom of the Championship table on -6.

The Owls will therefore almost certainly be demoted to League One for the fourth time since leaving the Premier League twenty-five years ago. Many Wednesdayites, however, acknowledge that it will be a little cost of Chansiri’s term ending.

Though he agrees with the regulations, Lineker feels Wednesdayites have endured enough hardship and says that a point deduction due to Chansiri’s shortcomings “doesn’t sit well.”

Lineker is upset about the points reduction on Wednesday.
“They have obviously gone into administration, and hopefully they can sort it all out,” Lineker stated in an interview with The Rest is Football podcast. However, they are now on -6 after receiving a 12-point penalty.

“I can see why clubs must endure consequences, but it seems to me like kicking a club when it’s at its lowest point. This doesn’t sit well with us; we’ve experienced it with other clubs. The fans seem to bear the brunt of the punishment.

Alongside Lineker on The Rest is Football podcast, former England and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer also shared his thoughts on the Owls’ current predicament.

According to Shearer, “The fans are the ones who are always going to be there, so it’s not their responsibility at all.

“But even though everything has been awful and terrible for them, I do feel some relief. I suppose they finally have their club back, but they may have to endure a little more suffering.

“I hope someone will take over and purchase the club, even though I am aware that they are in administration. It will be a little more painful before it gets better because they will most likely have to be demoted.

“Even removing the letters bearing his name from the stand causes him to leave the club. Even though the future is going to be difficult, they can at least try to start over.

“Hopefully they can find someone who has the club’s best interests at heart to take them forward,” Lineker said in closing. I wish the Owls luck.
