After defeating Rangers on the road in their second preseason match, Manchester United will head to the USA phase of their campaign full of confidence.

While more players should return for the tour, those who remain on the fringes and younger players have been able to make a name for themselves in the interim.

Young players like Toby Collyer have made a claim to make the first team, while players like Amad, who were already in the first team but weren’t starters, have caused the management a dilemma.

The defensive midfielder was predicted by many to be the academy’s next big thing, and his performances haven’t let those expectations down.

After playing for 45 minutes straight against Rangers, he is already resolving Ten Hag’s main issue from the previous season at United.

The Toby Collyer machine
When Ten Hag named the player the captain for the second half of the match against Rosenborg, he demonstrated his faith in the player’s ability.

That sign went one step further against the Rangers, as he was unquestionably a member of the “first XI,” which included every member of the first team during the first half.

Sitting at the base of midfield, keeping things simple, and sweeping up in front of the defence, Collyer was a ball-winning machine in both games.

Because United was playing under intense pressure against Rosenborg, he stayed in his spot and continued to steal the ball from the opposition.

When United had more possession of the ball against Rangers, he went into metronome mode and completed all 18 of his passes, continuing to be a recovery machine.

By doing this, his style of play is already resolving the main issue that United had during the previous season: getting overwhelmed in midfield during transitions.

During the previous season, United’s midfield was frequently invisible as the opposition cut through them with the speed of a hot knife through butter.

Many people questioned Casemiro’s defensive discipline, but there also appeared to be a structural problem because things weren’t any better when Christian Eriksen or Sofyan Amrabat played.

They now have a player in Collyer who is exactly the right type to be there when the opposition attacks the team during transitions.

He is not the kind to wander aimlessly in search of the ball or to rush the box in an attempt to score. Rather, he has a really rigorous position. Throughout these two preseason games, he repeatedly prevented opponents’ counterattacks by simply defending his position.

While he may need to do more with the ball to establish himself as a regular member of the first squad, United has been lacking his practical rather than showy style of play for the time being.

ideal time of year to succeed
The fact that this is the ideal season for a young player to make a breakthrough will give Collyer hope. This is due to United’s participation in the Europa League, where Ten Hag should be able to rotate at least for the group round matches.

In addition, there will be early Carabao Cup and FA Cup matches, so there will be plenty of opportunities until January.

Ten Hag appears to already be aware of his abilities and potential. The way is clear for a midfield breakthrough with Christian Eriksen and Casemiro both having one foot out the door and lots of interest in Scott McTominay and the team. If the Uruguayan is signed, as has been rumoured, Manuel Ugarte will provide Collyer with a mentor to learn from as well, given their comparable playing styles.

The onus will then be on Collyer to seize the opportunity and claim a spot on the starting lineup. All he has to do to be inspired is glance at Kobbie Mainoo.
