TRANSFER UPDATE: ‘Why are you signing him?’ – ESPN pundit baffled by ‘£50m’ Liverpool transfer

In recent days, there has been a rumour that has been particularly prevalent regarding a transfer from Liverpool, and Steve Nicol has been left rather perplexed by it.

Earlier than the end of June, when they were able to alleviate their PSR concerns, Newcastle’s need to sell players led them to approach the Reds about the possibility of Anthony Gordon moving to Anfield. Joe Gomez was offered as a trade in exchange for Gordon, as reported by the Daily Mail.

When the pundit was interviewed on ESPN FC, he expressed his opinion that a transfer for the England winger would not make much sense for Liverpool Football Club unless they were to sell off one of their existing attacking options.

“It doesn’t make any sense, unless Mo Salah is going, because I hope he’s not playing Mo Salah through the middle,” said Nicol. “It was a complete and utter bafflement.” To me, signing Anthony Gordon would mean that Mo Salah would no longer be a part of the team because he is not at his best through the middle of the pitch.

“Apart from that, why are you signing him down? Because of Gakpo, you already have a backup plan for Diaz. Additionally, Mo is playing on the right side of the field, and Jota and Nunez are both competing for the position of centre forward.

There is a healthy level of competition, and there are five players who are really strong, good, and sometimes brilliant for three positions available. So, where exactly is Anthony Gordon going to be playing? Why would you spend fifty million pounds on someone if you don’t have a need for them? I think he’s a great player, and I like him. They do not require him at this time if nobody wants to go.

Despite the fact that Gordon is an outstanding player who had a strong season in the Premier League in terms of goals and assists, Arne Slot would not be able to guarantee that he would be included in Liverpool’s current attack because there are already a number of options available to him.

Salah is currently in the final year of his contract, which pays him £350,000 per week. It is possible that Richard Hughes is attempting to cover the bases of the Reds in the event that one of our current forwards were to leave the club in the coming months.

In the present moment, the Newcastle winger is not someone that Liverpool Football Club is in dire need of, but rather someone who would be beneficial to have at Anfield.
