Chelsea defeated Newcastle 3-2 at Stamford Bridge to maintain their slim hopes of making it to Europe through the Premier League, thanks to a spectacular solo goal from Mykhailo Mudryk.

When the game was tied 2-1 late in the second half, the substitute’s magical move—taking the ball off Conor Gallagher’s foot quickly and deceiving defender Fabian Schar before circling the goalkeeper and finishing—turned the tide decisively in Chelsea’s favor.

For Mauricio Pochettino’s team, the victory was a huge step forward because they have so frequently let balanced duels, like this one, slip away from them.

Cole Palmer’s clever backheeled goal in the sixth minute gave them the lead, and Alexander Isak’s goal at the end of the half pulled Newcastle even.

Palmer’s 13th of the year, a masterful, driven finish from range, gave him the lead back.

With 15 minutes remaining, Mudryk’s goal appeared to have sealed the deal. However, Jacob Murphy’s incredible goal in the 90th minute forced Chelsea to reconsider, but the home team held on for a well-earned victory.

They had been struggling in the eleventh and had needed all the support they could get. After six minutes, Newcastle defender Sven Botman gave them a boost.

Malo Gusto’s low cross was well-aimed, but Botman should have had an easy time clearing it. Rather, he swept the ball absentmindedly to Palmer’s right boot, whose timid effort from outside the box was cleverly flicked home by Jackson with the deftest backheeled touch.

Raheem Sterling appeared resolute to make the most of his impressive start, pushing past Tino Livramento on the left and setting up Jackson for a low shot that Martin Dubravka easily stopped this time.

However, the lead was only one goal, and Chelsea let themselves get exposed when Trevoh Chalobah headed an ineffective clearance straight to Anthony Gordon, who missed the target.

Isak had the visitors’ best chance of the half thus far, coming within inches of connecting with Murphy’s cross as it zipped across the goal’s face before skipping over from two yards out as the ball came back in.

Chelsea is still capable of qualifying for Europe through the league. With a game remaining, a win here would move them to within four points of seventh-place West Ham; however, under Pochettino, consistency has been this team’s undoing.

They gave Newcastle another opportunity in the closing minutes of the half. The previously outstanding Gusto was observed attempting to juggle the ball in midfield. As Chalobah hurried to assume command, Bruno Guimaraes took him aside, putting him in a terrible awkward position.

The ball broke to Isak, who skipped inside the box and curled a beautiful shot past Djordje Petrovic’s dive and around Axel Disasi.

If Sterling had struck either side of Dubravka with his driven 18-yard attempt, Chelsea might have still been ahead at the half. But in all honesty, a 1-1 draw was a fair way to end an evenly matched half.

At the beginning of the second half, Sterling went close once more, bursting into the box and sending a shot just wide of the near post.

Chelsea was clearly the more assured team when it came to controlling the ball, containing Newcastle inside their own half and taking the lead again on minute 57.

Enzo Fernandez gathered the ball in the center and passed it to Palmer, who was 20 yards out with his back to the goal. The leading scorer for the home team turned inside with a single touch before smashing it with his left foot inside Dubravka’s near post.

A few minutes later, Sterling had a chance to seal the victory by circling the goalkeeper, but Dan Burn, who was covering, stopped him on the line.

A few tense moments occurred as the visitors put Chelsea’s defense to the test with balls into the box that were not entirely convincingly cleared.

After that, Mudryk performed a magical moment, and even with Murphy’s late rocket, there was finally hope for a successful conclusion to a wild season.
