Paul Merson shares ‘shocked’ West Ham United verdict in prediction for Brentford clash

Paul Merson gives his score prediction for Chelsea vs Brighton this weekend

Paul Merson has shared that he would be “shocked” if West Ham United do not lose to Brentford and has predicted the Hammers to lose 1-0.

Julen Lopetegui’s men have had a poor start to their Premier League season and currently sit fourteenth in the Premier League.

The Spaniard has been under a lot of pressure recently, with West Ham even giving him a three-game ultimatum to try and turn things around [GiveMeSport, 24 September].

Writing for the Sportskeeda website on 26 September in his weekly predictions, Merson shared his verdict on West Ham’s season so far and looked ahead to the Brentford game this weekend.

“I tell you what, West Ham are in big trouble,” he said. ” I always say be careful of what you wish for, they got rid of David Moyes after he won them a European trophy and now the new manager is struggling.

“They’re up against Brentford next and I’d be shocked if they don’t lose this game.

“I don’t see a lot between these teams on paper but the way they’re playing at the moment, there’s certainly a huge gap.

“Julen Lopetegui has to get a positive result in the next few games, West Ham fans won’t be happy with what they’ve seen so far this season.”

West Ham United need to get back to winning ways

Although West Ham had the fourth-worst defensive record in the Premier League last season, at the moment, it feels as if the Hammers were playing better football under David Moyes than they are with Lopetegui at the helm.

The board have reportedly demanded the manager turns around the club’s current form [Fabrizio Romano, 26 September] and are looking for him to deliver the results he said he was capable of.

There has already been some intense speculation around his future and if things don’t turn around soon, it feels as if the Spaniard’s time at the London Stadium could come to a premature end.

Of course, there’s still plenty of time for things to change and perhaps the club could find themselves in a run of form at some point, but the fact of the matter is, it needs to happen as soon as humanly possible.

Otherwise, the Hammers could find themselves dragged into a relegation battle despite having heavily spent during the summer to bolster their ranks and to try and compete for the European places.
