Why Celtic paid £20m for Arne Engels and Adam Idah

Arne Engels and Adam Idah are two Celtic players that are currently splitting opinions among fans.

To be clear, this is not a scathing review of both players; I believe they are valuable additions to the Celtic first team.

During his loan stay and his first season at Celtic, Idah demonstrated his ability to deliver when called upon.

According to Engels, you cannot become a true Belgian internationalist unless you possess quality.

So the criticism directed at this Celtic combination is most likely due to the amount of money Celtic spent on them. However, as Jarrod from Celts Down Under says, it is not the players’ fault.

Celtic got ‘ducked’ trying to by Adam Idah and Arne Engels

Celtic could have saved a few million pounds on each of these players, but the fact that the club paid above the odds will not surprise the Hoops’ fans.

Jarrod remarked on Celts Down Under, “I’m not sure if you remember the story about the Engels signing last year.

“So supposedly we were in for him early on, and we were advised, similar to the Idah situation, that you could get him cheaper. I believe it was around £7 million or £7.5 million for him. And so we were like, “Hold on, we’ll try and get a better deal at the end of the window.”

“Then what happened? Same thing happened to Idah. We held our balls for too long.

“And the next thing you know, you’re getting ducked, and you’re in danger. So we had to pay for overages. So, realistically, we had to go in and say, “This is the player we want.” How much is he? Okay. £7m? Cool’.

“Pay it. Done. We would have gotten him in a month earlier.

“It’s the same with Ida. We could have had him in for, what, £5 million? “We paid £9 million.
