Premier League issue statement on why Liverpool didn’t concede penalty in Crystal Palace win

VAR David Coote ruled that there was insufficient contact between Virgil van Dijk and Marc Guehi for Crystal Palace to be given a penalty against Liverpool at Selhurst Park.

The Premier League has quickly clarified why Virgil van Dijk did not surrender a penalty late in Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Crystal Palace.

Dutch defender Van Dijk was seen struggling with Palace and England player Marc Guehi in the box, but the judgment was overturned by video assistant referee David Coote, who determined there was nothing to penalize in the incident.

Diogo Jota’s early goal was enough for Arne Slot’s squad to secure their latest victory at Selhurst Park, but Palace manager Oliver Glasner was furious on the touchline after Guehi fell down in the 71st minute and referee Simon Hooper did not point to the penalty.

However, the Premier League’s match centre account on social media soon clarified the procedure.

“The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge by van Dijk on Guehi is checked and confirmed by VAR – deeming that the challenge was not sustained holding and had no impact on the play,” according to the report.

Van Dijk was awarded man of the match later, telling TNT Sports, “It’s difficult to come here. The outcomes over the years have been tight and close.

“I believe we scored a terrific goal. We should have done better in the second half, but we expected them to put some pressure on the ball. It concludes our run on a positive note before the internationals.

“We’re going to keep working. We’re never satisfied. We needed Alli [Alisson] twice, which is something we want to avoid. “Everyone contributes to clean sheets.”I believe there are always expectations for various teams; whatever the outside world thinks of us, we don’t care. We hope to challenge, compete, win, and be successful.”

Liverpool have won their first four away league games of the season for the third time in a row, following 1990-91 and 2019-20, and Slot has nine victories from his first ten games in all competitions since taking over for Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

Liverpool now leads by four points ahead of the 3pm kickoffs.
