Interviews can be perilous for players, although Virgil van Dijk successfully navigated the pitfalls that ensnared his Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Virgil van Dijk declined to engage in premature discussions of a possible ‘quadruple,’ in contrast to his Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold last season.

Van Dijk, 33, was inquired whether he believed Arne Slot’s team could collect all four major championships following the Merseysiders’ decisive 6-3 victory against Tottenham Hotspur, ensuring their position at the top for Christmas. Liverpool had previously been predicted to achieve historical success, having been favored to secure all four titles in the 2019/20 and 2021/22 seasons, as well as in the most recent season.

During Jurgen Klopp’s tenure, the Reds secured the Premier League, the FA Cup, and two League Cups in those seasons. However, several fans felt somewhat underwhelmed by the incessant discussions regarding the quadruple.

Last year, as the Reds excelled in domestic competitions and the Europa League, Alexander-Arnold declared his ambition to secure all four titles in Klopp’s final season as manager. Despite the commendable nature of his goal, his remarks proved detrimental; although they secured the League Cup by defeating Chelsea in the final, their pursuit of the title stalled in the last stages.

The situation deteriorated further when Manchester United and Atalanta eliminated them from the FA Cup and the Europa League, respectively. Despite Liverpool presently leading the Premier League and Champions League standings, and reaching the semi-finals of the League Cup in Slot’s remarkable inaugural season, seasoned centre-back and captain Van Dijk dismissed the notion of a quadruple, unlike Alexander-Arnold.

In response to inquiries over a potential quadruple, Van Dijk stated to Sky Sports: “I refuse to engage in discussions about winning any trophies, whether one, two, three, or four.”

He stated, “I believe I have provided responses multiple times, indicating that we do not consider what is forthcoming in May.” We aspire to be present in May, however we have observed the challenges involved. Other teams, aside from City, are capable of achieving it. However, we concentrate on the future that lies before us. That is the sole matter.

The Dutchman stated, “It is essential to be present in every forthcoming game.” Currently, there was a challenging match involving Spurs today, although it was an excellent game. The subsequent match is against Leicester, and it is the sole game on which we may have influence.

26-year-old Alexander-Arnold conveyed a markedly different sentiment when he spoke to CNN in February: “I am entirely committed to securing every available trophy.” My objective is to achieve the quadruple victory. We are within weeks away from acquiring our inaugural piece of silverware.

“Each match resembles a final now, as another team [Manchester City] appears to be gaining momentum, indicating that the outcome will likely be decided in the final moments, as is customary.” It signifies that each game is imperative to win, unequivocally.

“That is your preference.” You desire to be challenged and to exert yourself to the utmost limit. A draw is perceived as a loss, irrespective of the circumstances.

Liverpool’s initial opportunity for trophy this season arises from the Carabao Cup, with the defending champions matched against Spurs in the semi-finals, while Arsenal confront Newcastle. In the FA Cup third round, the Reds will host Accrington Stanley at Anfield on January 11.

Despite the Reds’ success on the pitch, fans are concerned about the futures of Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, and Mohamed Salah. All three contracts are scheduled to expire in the summer, allowing the trio to negotiate pre-contract deals with overseas teams when the January transfer market opens.

Alexander-Arnold has been prominently associated with a transfer to Real Madrid. Notwithstanding the uncertainty, the performances of all three have remained commendable.

Van Dijk has been dominant in the Reds’ defense, Alexander-Arnold has exhibited creativity and defensive prowess, while Salah is at the forefront of the goalscoring leaderboard with 18 goals and 15 assists in 24 matches in all competitions for the Merseysiders.

Following Sunday’s 6-3 victory, Van Dijk offered an update on his circumstances and disclosed: “There is no deadline whatsoever.” We shall observe what the future entails. Is there a status update? Negative.
