Trailblazing Premier League referee backs major VAR change – ‘You want to know’

Referees have been making judgements on the use of video assistant referees (VAR) to the crowd in the stadium as part of a new trial. This strategy is now being supported by a former Premier League match official and PGMOL manager.

Rebecca Welch, a former referee in the Premier League, has expressed her support for the initiative that would encourage officials to make announcements about VAR rulings throughout the stadium.

It was in December of 2023 when Welch supervised Fulham’s match against Burnley that she made history by being the first woman to ever take control of a game in the Premier League. At this time, she is serving as the manager of the Select Group Women’s Professional Game officials for the PGMOL players.

Additionally, the organisation functions as a supervisor for officials at the highest level of the men’s game. This past week, one of those referees, Stuart Attwell, made history when he communicated a judgement made by a video assistant referee (VAR) to the audience for the very first time.

As Attwell was taking command of Tottenham’s victory against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, he informed the audience that a goal scored by Dominic Solanke had been disallowed due to the fact that he was offside. As a result of this decision, Welch feels that the experience that supporters have with VAR will be enhanced.

When asked about the announcements that are coming in, Welch stated, “That is not something that is new to me because we were a part of it at the (Women’s) World Cup.” “When it arrived, it was a little bit intimidating because, as referees, we sell everything with our body language. It was a little stressful.”

It was never necessary for us to sell things with our tongues in the past. At the World Cup, I found that to be a very intriguing experience to attempt. But listen, I believe that if you are in a stadium, and I have been in stadiums where a check takes a long time, you might want to know what is going on.

As of the other night, Stuart had completed the first one, and I believe that it has been received fairly favourably. It was really easy to understand, brief, and straight to the point in his statement.

There are some people who are not pleased with the shift, despite the fact that Welch has supported the decision. After the game, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou gave a vehement speech in which he criticised the decision and expressed his anger.

Upon being questioned about the video assistant referee (VAR), Postecoglou responded, “I’m really surprised with how easily people in this country let the game change so quickly.” It has altered more with the introduction of VAR than it has in the previous fifty years combined. When we were younger, we never discussed offsides or holding in the box.

“Did anyone here actually like the announcement that was made today? Has that caused anyone to become excited? We need to exercise caution, and why do we wish to make such a significant alteration to the game? To put it simply, I had the impression that people would be more cautious about the integrity of the game.

“I believe that there is a great deal of uncertainty at the present based on the premise of technology, and I am wondering why no one is speaking up about it.

“Especially in this nation where you are the guardians of the game, you have a song that says it’s coming home, this is your game, and someone from Australia who is on the other side of the world is the one who asks for adjustments.
