DONE DEAL: Five-Star Phenom Johnson Nelson III Shocks College Basketball World, Commits to BYU

PROVO, Utah — In a move that has left the collegiate basketball landscape reeling, Johnson Nelson III, the explosive five-star wing and one of the most electric scoring threats in the 2026 class, has officially committed to the BYU Cougars.
Nelson made the announcement live in a high-stakes reveal, choosing BYU over heavy interest from blue-bloods like Kentucky, Duke, and Kansas. His decision marks a monumental victory for head coach Kevin Young, who continues to prove that Provo is the new destination for future NBA lottery picks.
The “New NBA Factory”
Coach Young’s vision of an “NBA in Provo” has reached a fever pitch. Nelson represents the latest cornerstone in a recruiting blitz that has seen BYU land a five-star prospect in three consecutive cycles: Egor Demin (2024), AJ Dybantsa (2025), and now Johnson Nelson III (2026).
“The energy in Provo is different,” Nelson said following his commitment. “Coach Young’s NBA pedigree and the way they’ve developed guys like AJ Dybantsa made this an easy choice. I wanted a program that would push me to the next level, and BYU is that place.”
Scouting Report: A Human Highlight Reel
Nelson III, a 6’8″ versatile forward with a 7’1″ wingspan, is widely regarded as a “box office” talent. Known for his gravity-defying athleticism and elite shot-making, he brings a unique skill set to the Big 12.
Three-Level Scorer: Capable of hitting deep transition threes or finishing through contact at the rim.
Defensive Menace: His length allows him to guard multiple positions, a key trait in Coach Young’s switch-heavy defensive scheme.
Playmaking: Rare vision for a wing, often serving as a secondary initiator in high-octane offenses.
BYU’s Loaded 2026 Class
With Nelson’s commitment, BYU’s 2026 class is now tracking toward a top-3 national ranking. The Cougars are assembling a “Super Team” designed to take the Big 12 by storm.
