DONE DEAL: Five-Star Phenom Dylan Mingo Shocks College Basketball World, Commits to North Carolina Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — In a monumental recruiting victory that has sent ripples through the Atlantic Coast Conference, the North Carolina Tar Heels have officially secured a commitment from five-star point guard Dylan Mingo.

The announcement, made on ESPN’s First Take, marks a defining moment for head coach Hubert Davis. Mingo, a 6-foot-5 elite playmaker from Long Island Lutheran (NY), chose the Tar Heels over a final list that included Baylor, Penn State, and Washington.

The “New York to Chapel Hill” Pipeline

Mingo is widely regarded as a top-10 prospect in the Class of 2026 and the No. 1 ranked point guard by multiple recruiting services. Known for his “New York guard” toughness combined with modern length, Mingo represents the exact archetype Hubert Davis has prioritized: a versatile backcourt weapon who can score at all three levels and facilitate at a professional pace.

“I chose North Carolina for North Carolina itself,” Mingo said during his announcement. “Seeing the joy the players had after they won the Duke game—that atmosphere had a huge impact on me. I want to be part of that culture.”

A Back-to-Back Recruiting Masterclass

By landing Mingo, Hubert Davis has now secured a top-10 national recruit in consecutive cycles. Mingo will join a roster that is already set to feature 2025 five-star standout Caleb Wilson, forming one of the most talented young cores in the country.

The commitment is particularly notable because Mingo’s older brother, Kayden Mingo, is currently the starting point guard for Penn State. Despite the family connection to the Nittany Lions, the prestige of the “Blue Blood” program in Chapel Hill proved too much to pass up.

Building the 2026 “Super Class”

Mingo’s pledge is the cornerstone of a 2026 class that is quickly climbing the national rankings. The current commitment list includes:

Dylan Mingo: Five-star PG; consensus Top-10 recruit.

Maximo Adams: Five-star forward and 2026 L.A. Times Player of the Year.

Malloy Smith: Four-star combo guard and son of Tar Heel legend Kenny “The Jet” Smith.
