Ruben Amorim, Manchester United’s head coach, might be dealing with a defensive selection issue ahead of his first Premier League encounter against Ipswich Town on Sunday.

During the international break, the Red Devils lost Lisandro Martinez (back/hip) and Victor Lindelof (groin), while Harry Maguire’s recovery from a calf injury remains doubtful.

On the other hand, Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro, and Tyrell Malacia have all trained under the new manager, but given that all three have spent months on the sidelines – Malacia for a year and a half – they should not be rushed back into the first XI just yet.

Amorim is therefore left with the skeleton of his three-man middle line, which should undoubtedly include Jonny Evans, Matthijs de Ligt, and maybe Casemiro if none of the aforementioned injury victims recover in time.

If Kobbie Mainoo, who has also trained following a thigh injury, is given the go-ahead to partner Manuel Ugarte in the heart of Manchester United’s midfield, Casemiro will be free to deputise in defence.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are the apparent starting wing-backs, but it will be interesting to see how Amorim sees Antony, Marcus Rashford, Amad Diallo, and Alejandro Garnacho fitting into his system.

The latter is a strong possibility to start alongside Bruno Fernandes as one of two supporting acts to the center striker, with Rasmus Hojlund likely to take his place as Joshua Zirkzee’s problems persist.

Manchester United’s likely starting lineup:

Onana, De Ligt, Casemiro, Evans; Dalot, Ugarte, Mainoo, Mazraoui; Fernandes, Hojlund, Garnacho.
