R.I.P: Formal Real Madrid and France international confirm death this morning
Real Madrid officially reported the passing of Miguel Angel Gonzalez, aged 76, on Tuesday, February 6th, 2024. From 1968 to 1986, he served as Real Madrid’s goalkeeper and achieved numerous accolades, including eight La Liga titles.
Miguel Angel Gonzalez, a renowned goalkeeper who left a lasting impact on Real Madrid’s history and was hailed by the club as a “legend of Spanish football,” passed away at the age of 76 due to ALS, a condition he publicly disclosed in December 2022. Real Madrid C. F. expressed profound sorrow upon receiving news of the demise of Miguel Angel Gonzalez, a highly esteemed goalkeeper who holds a prominent place in our club’s history. He is recognized as a legendary figure in both Real Madrid and Spanish football.
Miguel Angel was a player with Real Madrid for a period of 18 seasons, from 1968 to 1986. During his time with the team, he achieved great success, winning eight league titles, two UEFA Cups, five Spanish Cups, and one Spanish League Cup.
Miguel Angel, known as ‘the cat’ due to his exceptional reflexes and flexibility, won the Zamora Trophy in the 1975-76 season. He also represented Spain 18 times. He participated in two FIFA World Cups representing the Spanish national team. The first was in Argentina in 1978, under the guidance of coach Ladislao Kubala. The second was in Spain in 1982, with coach Jose Emilio Santamaria.
Miguel Angel has had a long-standing association with Real Madrid throughout his entire life. The statement indicates that in addition to his 18 seasons as a player, he also served in various roles such as first team delegate, goalkeeping coach, and director of the former Real Madrid Sports Complex. “Real Madrid expresses its condolences to all supporters of the club.” The Spanish club expressed their hope for him to find eternal peace.
