After Everton’s controversial last-gap penalty against Manchester United was overturned, fans came to the same conclusion. They all made the same point.

United were able to draw even with Everton in the second half thanks to goals scored by Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte. In the first half, Everton had a 2-0 lead and were flying thanks to goals scored by Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

After Ashley Young appeared to be fouled on the rebound, Andre Onana spilt Idrissa Gueye’s effort, Andy Madley pointed to the spot for a penalty kick for Everton in the final minute of the game. This was a frenetic conclusion to the match.

Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire appeared to have pulled Young back, but after a lengthy delay, the referee was encouraged to watch the incident on the video assistant referee monitor. Young appeared to have been pulled back by both player.

Madley then changed his mind to completely reverse his decision and cancel the penalty, much to the frustration of Everton players and fans alike. This occurred after Madley had watched the screen.

Despite the fact that penalties are reversed in the event that they are clear and obvious, a significant number of fans on X were adamant that the incorrect decision was reached and claimed that the appropriate angles were not shown.

I heard someone say, “Penalty all day.” Within the penalty area, two United defenders bring him down. VAR demonstrating to the referee the incorrect angles in order to get it taken away.

Someone else remarked, “The VAR has made a mistake here! That was a blatant form of punishment. I don’t understand why they didn’t show the referee different angles.

A third became enraged and asked, “What the hell is wrong with the VAR?” They are just a bunch of bumbling idiots when it comes to technology. How is it possible for you to have access to all of those angles while at the same time recommending the referee to the screen and showing him only one angle where the foul was obvious? It is clear that Everton has been treated unfairly.

A fourth participant commented: “That was disgusting from VAR not showing all the angles for what should have been a penalty for Young.”

A final user concurred, saying, “The video assistant referee is showing the referee all the wrong angles, and it appears that there is not enough contact.” Which is such a flawed system.

However, Ruben Amorim stated that the penalty was a “soft touch” in his post-match interview, but he did not want to go into further detail about the penalty.

During the ‘Match Officials Mic’d Up’ show, which Michael Owen hosts, referee chief Howard Webb may conduct an analysis of the incident. The show will feature dialogue from the referee as well as those who are present in the video assistant referee room.

Everton is still in 12th place, while United is still in 15th place, having only earned 15 points out of a possible 45 under Amorim. The point that was shared at Goodison Park allows Everton to maintain their position.
