Premier League release statement to explain why VAR overturned Everton’s penalty during match vs Man Utd

The controversial decision made by the video assistant referee (VAR) to not award Everton a penalty kick in the final minute of their match against Manchester United has compelled the official Premier League match centre account to issue a statement.
United overcame an early onslaught from Everton and came back to draw 2-2 with the Toffees in a Premier League match that took place at Goodison Park on Saturday morning. The match was an encounter between the two teams.
The home team led 2-0 going into halftime thanks to goals scored by Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure. However, an equaliser was scored by United captain Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte, bringing the score to 2-2.
After the referee, Andy Madley, awarded the home team a penalty kick late in the game, it appeared that the home team would once again have the chance to secure a victory. However, the decision was controversially overturned, which caused outrage as an official explanation was released.
The referee, Madley, pointed to the spot in the 93rd minute of the match after it was determined that Everton’s Ashley Young had been fouled inside the penalty area by United defender Matthijs de Ligt, who had pulled Young to the ground.
Nevertheless, after a lengthy and tense review by the video assistant referee, the referee was advised to come to the monitor, and the decision was overturned. This was due to the fact that, despite the fact that the Dutchman pulled Young’s shirt, it was determined that it was not sufficient to be considered a foul.
“Video Assistant Referee (VAR) checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review,” the official Premier League match centre account explained in a post that was published on X.
“The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.”
The decision was met with widespread outrage from fans, who took to various social media platforms to express their disapproval of the decision.
In addition, Mike Dean, a former referee in the Premier League, is of the opinion that the penalty should have been awarded. Dean acknowledged that the decision to not award the penalty was a contentious one.
During an interview with Sky Sports, he stated, “It should not be overturned – he has made a meal of it, he has chucked himself to the floor, though…”
