Aston Villa goalkeeper booed for ruining half-time kids penalty shootout after refusing to move

On Tuesday evening, Robin Olsen was the public enemy number one at Selhurst Park when he refused to permit a penalty shootout for children.

Before replacing Emiliano Martinez for the second half of his team’s 4-1 loss at Crystal Palace, the Aston Villa custodian was warming up during the break.

Olsen was determined to ensure that his preparations were meticulous, as he had not participated in the Premier League since the 3-0 loss at Chelsea on December 1.

Just as Palace staff were preparing to conduct their customary half-time penalty shootout, the 35-year-old was engaged in a catching drill at the Whitehorse Lane end.

And despite the host’s efforts to persuade Olsen to leave the goal, the 35-year-old refused to budge and simply ignored his pleas.

The Palace staff member and the enraged fans were greatly disappointed when he merely waved for crosses to be directed into his six-yard box from either channel.

The 75-cap Sweden international was the target of loud boos and jeers, with supporters even chanting “w*****” in unison at the shot-stopper.

Pete the Eagle, Palace’s mascot, appeared to be incensed as he gazed down at Olsen as he walked across the pitch.

A Villa coach then appeared to argue with the host to move out of the way, and the host subsequently apologised to the fans and the children.

He apologised on the microphone, stating, “I am sincerely apologetic; this is the first time it has ever occurred.”

Prior to introducing: “To the fans of Palace, I am genuinely at a loss for words.”

Although Olsen was entitled to warm up prior to his introduction, his anger was exacerbated by the fact that he was preparing in the opposite end of the pitch from where he would be playing.

The shootout was relocated to the Holmesdale Road Stand, which was a blessing for the children who were patiently waiting.

After playing a significant role in Morgan Rogers’ 52nd-minute equaliser, Olsen’s debut off the bench could not have been more successful.

He directed a long ball upwards to Ollie Watkins, who subsequently headed the ball behind for Rogers. Rogers subsequently scored to level the score at 1-1.

However, Palace and their supporters ultimately emerged victorious as Villa’s collapse in south London resulted in Olsen conceding three goals.

Nevertheless, Olsen, who was subjected to boos from the crowd during the second period, could not be held accountable for any of the goals.

Palace, who have risen to 12th position and denied Villa the opportunity to move up to fifth, were also quick to add insult to Olsen’s injury.
