Oliver made a mistake. – A former PGMOL chief criticises a ‘bad decision’ in the turbulent Liverpool vs Manchester United match.

The former FIFA referee noted, “Liverpool suffered from a terrible judgement by Michael Oliver to not award a penalty for an obvious handball in the penalty area. Oliver made a mistake.

Oliver made some strange decisions at Anfield.

This incident occurred only 18 minutes into the game and was the second of Oliver’s many blunders at Anfield.

The Premier League has clarified why Manchester United’s goal against Liverpool was permitted.

Liverpool fell behind early in their Premier League encounter against Manchester United at Anfield, despite complaints directed at referee Michael Oliver.

The Premier League Match Centre has explained why Bryan Mbeumo’s goal was allowed to stand in Liverpool’s game against Manchester United.

The Reds fell behind early at Anfield, with Mbeumo scoring past Giorgi Mamardashvili, although the goal was questionable since Alexis MacAllister was injured.

The Argentine midfielder was assaulted by teammate Virgil van Dijk and appeared to have sustained a head injury. However, rather than suspending play, as is normal in the Premier League, referee Michael Oliver permitted the game to proceed.

Mbeumo took advantage to score the opening goal, and Sky Sports announcer Peter Drury noted that the goal was allowed because Oliver did not spot Mac Allister on the pitch.

Jamie Carragher made a mocking joke from the Sky commentary booth, saying, “He was on the floor, holding his head!”

Virgil van Dijk and Arne Slot both protested to the referee, and Carragher commented on the ruling, which generally halts play to allow players to receive treatment.

He added: “I’ve been irritated in the past when players abused that rule. There was an altercation near the dugout during the Arsenal game yesterday, and the referee halted play.

“I am quite surprised Michael Oliver did not stop play.”

However, colleague Gary Neville chastised the Liverpool captain for his role in the goal, claiming he lost track of Mbeumo, who subsequently scored.

Neville said, “Mac Allister falls down, but what surprises me is Van Dijk. Mbeumo dashes past him, and he doesn’t notice. That is the biggest shock.

“Mbeumo reacts like a boxer, gets up, and takes off. Mamardashvili is powerless to stop it, marking an impressive start for Manchester United.”

Liverpool believed they should have received a penalty immediately after for a possible handball by Amad Diallo, but Oliver did not signal for one.

According to a social media message from the Premier League Match Centre, the referee’s decision to award no penalty was reviewed and affirmed by VAR, who concluded that Amad’s arm was in a natural and justifiable position.

Liverpool came into the contest after three consecutive Premier League and Champions League losses.

With Arsenal winning at Fulham on Saturday night, the Reds might fall four points behind at the top of the table by the conclusion of the weekend.
