Viktor Gyokeres Burns Micah Richards, Leaving Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher in Stitches

Viktor Gyokeres delivered an excellent interview following what was arguably an even more remarkable performance, as Arsenal defeated Atletico Madrid 4-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Much has been made of the Swedish striker’s form – or lack thereof – but he scored twice in just three shots under the lights at the Emirates Stadium.

Signed from Sporting for £63.5 million in the summer, the Gunners’ hierarchy hoped that the 27-year-old would become the out-and-out striker Mikel Arteta’s side had been missing after finishing second in the Premier League for three seasons in a row. While last night’s performance brings his total to five goals in 12 outings, it was the first time viewers seen Gyokeres’ true potential.

As a result of his performance, he was named Man of the Match and interviewed on CBS Sports Golazo, mostly by Micah Richards – though Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher, who were back in the studio, couldn’t help but chime in on occasion. The debate is fascinating to watch, as the Sweden international discusses his objectives, the significance of wearing the number 14 shirt, and, in true CBS manner, reveals which of the three experts he prefers.

Gyokeres on Season’s Ambitions, Wearing No.14

Henry, Arsenal’s greatest-ever player, was quick to move on from Gyokeres’ midweek performance and question what truly matters: what would a successful season look like for him individually and for Arsenal as a whole? The answer was simple: the 27-year-old quickly expressed his wish for cutlery.

“First and foremost, of course, we want to win trophies,” he told me. “That is our desire, and it is, without a doubt, the most crucial. I want to contribute to objectives while also improving my game.” Watch the complete interview below.

When Henry joked about his previous team winning the Premier League and Champions League double, Gyokeres responded, “Yeah, that would work with me.” When the topic shifted to the obligations that come with wearing the No.14 shirt, he told Carragher:

“It feels good to be honest. That shirt contains a lot of goals, and there will be many more, so it feels wonderful. To be honest, there weren’t many shirt numbers available [when I joined the club], but when I saw that [14] was available, it was a great honour to take it, and sadly, I didn’t have Thierry’s number to ask him if I could have it.”

Gyokeres Put Micah Richards in His Place After the Final Question.

The CBS Sports Golazo studio, which also includes Kate Scott (previously Abdo), enjoys putting a comic spin on its coverage, and the age-old topic that keeps coming up among the favourite quartet is which pundit the interviewee like the best.

When Richards asked Gyokeres that question, pleading under his breath that it would not be the customary answer of Thierry Henry, he responded:

“Yeah, obviously, I feel a little bit sorry for you, because you got benched from the studio.”

His remarks pertained to the fact that Richards had been replaced on the panel by Clint Dempsey, who had taken up a position as a reporter in north London. However, Carragher’s laughing left the question more or less unanswered, implying that he was not going to claim the former Manchester City defender was his favourite.
