Mick McNeil, a former Ipswich Town captain, died at the age of 85.

Mick McNeil, the former skipper of Ipswich Town, died at the age of 85.


The former full-back, who gained nine caps for England, appeared 173 times for the Tractor Boys between 1964 and 1972, and was a major member of the squad that won the Second Division title in 1967–68.

Ipswich Town paid tribute to their former skipper via social media, writing:



“The club is profoundly saddened to learn of the death of former captain Mick McNeil. Once a Blue, always a Blue!”


McNeil began his professional career with Middlesbrough, making his debut at the age of 18 and playing in 193 matches for his local side.

He obtained his first England call-up while still playing in the Second Division with Boro, and he won nine international caps, the last coming against Luxembourg at the age of 21.

Middlesbrough also conveyed their respects, stating:

“Our thoughts are with Mick’s family and friends at this sad time.”

After retiring from football, McNeil went on to establish a successful chain of sports stores, keeping his connection to the game he loved.
