EFL Confirm Administration and Points Deduction for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday has been docked 12 points and placed into administration, according to the English Football League, as they prepare to host Oxford United at Hillsborough this weekend.
The Yorkshire club, who was already at the bottom of the Championship table following a disappointing start to the season under head coach Henrik Pedersen, faces an uphill battle to keep their second-tier status and is on the verge of going out of business due to chronic financial troubles.

The English Football League has confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday has entered administration, releasing a statement that reads: “The EFL can confirm that it has now received formal notice that Dejphon Chansiri, the director of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, has taken the necessary steps to appoint administrators to both the club and the company that owns Hillsborough.”
“While this development results in an automatic deduction of 12 points in accordance with all clubs’ agreed-upon regulations, it also provides Sheffield Wednesday with the opportunity to move matters forward toward a successful sale and a secure future under new ownership.”
“The EFL will now consult with the administrators about the immediate actions needed to achieve an early resolution and end the ongoing uncertainty faced by Sheffield Wednesday staff, management, players, supporters, and all those associated with the club and their local community.”
“The Championship league table will be updated with immediate effect.”
Sheffield Wednesday, who will be minus six points heading into the weekend, has named Julian Pitts, Kris Wigfield, and Paul Stanley of Begbies Traynor as joint administrators of the club and Sheffield 3 Limited, the corporation that owns Hillsborough.
The Owls have admitted that they attempted to agree a sale with a credible interested party prior to reaching this stage, which would have ended Chansiri’s reign, but a deal could not be reached, and increasing pressure from creditors forced the Championship strugglers to seek assistance.
Sheffield Wednesday disclosed in a statement that attendance at Hillsborough had dropped by about 35% since last season, from over 26,000 to around 17,000, as fans boycotted games in an attempt to force the ownership to walk away.
