The full reason why Auston Trusty was not sent off for a dubious challenge during their Scottish League Cup victory over Rangers F.C.

According to Premier Sports analysts, Celtic was lucky not to be reduced to ten men during their match at Hampden after Rangers’ Thelo Aasgaard was sent off.


Before things got worse, Aasgaard was sent off for a high tackle on Anthony Ralston, his studs catching the Celtic defender on the upper thigh. Danny Röhl’s team had already fallen behind to Johnny Kenny’s front-post header from Arne Engels’ corner.



Another contentious incident occurred when Auston Trusty smacked Jack Butland in the head after the Rangers goalie hurried out to pick up a loose ball from a set-piece.


Neil Lennon told Premier Sports at halftime:

It might have become crimson. Completely unneeded. Perhaps Celtic is fortunate not to be in dire straits themselves. It’s not clever of Trusty to let Jack get the ball, but he always does. Real force doesn’t exist, but that isn’t the point. He is very fortunate, but VAR didn’t think it was red when he looked at it.

Steven Davis, a Rangers great, concurred, adding:

It’s a red card for me. It’s a really stupid challenge. He gave the referee a decision to make because Celtic was in control and he chose to leave his foot in when he could have pulled out.
