Another Celtic against Rangers clash. Controversy surrounding referees

Another Old Firm clash, another refereeing argument center stage.

Unlike the goalless draw between the rivals in August, the Premier Sports Cup semi-final between Celtic and Rangers was a much more entertaining game, albeit not without controversy. Two big official decisions overshadowed the match, with one in particular impacting how it played out.

Before discussing Thelo Aasgaard’s red card, former FIFA referee Mark Clattenburg has spoken on Auston Trusty’s yellow card for a late first-half challenge on Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland.

According to Clattenburg, Trusty was a “lucky boy” to avoid a red card, as many believed the Celtic defender’s tackle could easily have resulted in his dismissal.

VAR Sparks Debate. VAR is once again at the center of a Celtic vs Rangers clash, with the technology gaining more attention than the game itself.

With a cup final berth on the line, the officiating crew has become the major talking point, a recurring one in Glasgow derbies this season.

It will be interesting to hear Willie Collum’s reaction on the next VAR Review show, as the head of referees confronts yet another contentious situation to address.

The incident occurred in the last stages of the first half, with Celtic leading 1-0, when Trusty surged into a 50/50 challenge and appeared to catch Butland late, reigniting discussion over refereeing consistency.
