Southampton Makes Decision to Re-Appoint Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Ralph Hasenhuttl is unlikely to return to Southampton after Will Still was fired on Sunday, Sky Sports has learned.

Saints are still looking for a new manager, but they are allegedly not in a hurry to make an appointment, as the process of choosing their next permanent boss is ongoing.

Sporting director Johannes Spors is thought to be putting together a list of applicants for the St Mary’s position, but Hasenhuttl is unlikely to be considered despite recently watching the club.

The 58-year-old, who led Southampton from 2018 to 2022, was reportedly a guest of Bristol City manager Gerhard Struber during the Saints’ 3-1 defeat at Ashton Gate last month.

According to Sky Sports, Southampton are also unlikely to sign former Rangers manager Russell Martin, who was fired last month.

As previously revealed by GIVEMESPORT, numerous Saints players and staff would welcome the Scottish tactician’s return.

Southampton parted ways with Still on Sunday, leaving the south coast club 21st in the Championship after two wins in 13 games.

Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Preston North End was Still’s penultimate game in command, extending their winless streak to five games in the second division.

Still was hired by St Mary’s in May on a three-year contract, but he only stayed for five months, as Ruben Martinez, Clement Lemaitre, and Carl Martin all left the club.

Tonda Eckert, the Under-21 head coach, has taken over managerial duties on an interim basis, and GIVEMESPORT insiders believe the 32-year-old is a strong contender for the permanent position.

Hasenhuttl was appointed Southampton manager in December 2018, succeeding Mark Hughes, and led the club to Premier League safety at the end of the season.

Under the Austrian manager, the Saints finished 16th, 11th, and twice 15th in the Premier League, suffering their two most crushing defeats in history.

The south coast club fell 9-0 at home to Leicester City in 2019/20, and the same result was repeated away to Manchester United the following season.

Hasenhuttl was sacked of his duties at St Mary’s in November 2022, with the club in the Premier League relegation zone.

He returned to management over 18 months later, taking over Bundesliga team Wolfsburg in March 2024 for 44 games.
