“He’s the Man United best signing and he has proven it…I’m so pleased to have signed him”: Erik ten Hag praises Man United player who extremely outstanding against Everton yesterday as he called him the Club’s best signing
Jonny Evans, the center back for Manchester United, received praise from manager Erik ten Hag following his strong performance in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Everton at Old Trafford.
Evans started the Manchester derby loss to City at the Etihad Stadium six days prior, and he made his second straight Premier League start for the Toffees. The Northern Irishman, who plays in the middle of defense alongside Raphael Varane, put on a strong performance that helped United record their first Premier League clean sheet in five games.
With 89 minutes remaining, Evans was replaced by Willy Kambwala to a standing ovation after completing four clearances, blocking four shots, and producing two interceptions. He also claimed an accuracy rate of 88% when passing.
Due to United’s defensive injury issues, the former Leicester City player—who rejoined Old Trafford on a free transfer last September after spending the summer at Carrington to maintain his fitness levels—was once again assigned to start in the middle of the back four. Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire are still not present.
Victor Lindelof was once again required to play as an emergency left-back due to Luke Shaw’s absence. Evans and Varane complemented each other brilliantly against Everton, despite the visitors registering 23 shots, despite Ten Hag’s defensive dilemma.
Ten Hag praised Evans during his post-match press conference, stating, “Oh yes, [I have been] very [impressed.” We are happy that we added a fifth center back, as most people would ask, “Why are there five center backs in the squad?” But as you can see, we’re glad we took this action.

“His season-long performance shows how important a player he is to this team. He’ll consistently deliver quality work and be there when needed.
Originally brought in as a backup, Evans has now made 24 appearances for United across all competitions this season, including 18 in the Premier League. When Evans finally made his way back to the M16, no one could have predicted that he would play that many games.
The number of back injuries United has suffered this season has aided the defender’s case. He has, nevertheless, generally performed admirably when called upon.
Even though Evans was only expected to make a few appearances, the decision to sign him on a free transfer has proven to be prudent and sensible. Evans, at thirty-six, is not United’s future. The Reds have benefited from his experience at pivotal times.
When cost is taken into consideration, he has been one of the more successful signings of the Ten Hag era. Since the Dutchman was named manager nearly two years ago, United has spent more than £400 million, but not many of the players they have brought in during that time have lived up to the hype.
Sofyan Amrabat and Antony, for example, have performed remarkably poorly, and Mason Mount’s Old Trafford career has yet to take off due to injury. Evans has been one of the best additions, pound for pound, even though he signed at the age of 35. It was a risk that paid off.
