Erik ten Hag breaks silence on Steve McClaren leaving Man Utd as exit plan clarified

Following Steve McClaren’s decision to leave Manchester United, Erik ten Hag offered a tasteful homage to the coach.

A little more than two weeks before the start of the current Premier League season, McClaren, 63, made the decision to leave Old Trafford and take a job as manager of Jamaica. Prior to his role changing earlier this summer, the former England manager served as one of Ten Hag’s two primary assistants throughout his first several years at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag said goodbye to forward coach Benni McCarthy and No. 2 Mitchell van der Gaag and reorganised his coaching staff, which is why. However, the Dutchman, who had previously collaborated with McClaren at Eredivisie side Twente, had no intention of bidding the 63-year-old farewell when he chose to remain at home instead of flying for United’s current preseason tour in the USA.

Rather, McClaren has been training with players who competed at the Copa America and Euro 2024 at Carrington. United stated that McClaren won’t leave the team until the first team has returned from the USA and joined up with the rest of the teammates because Jamaica doesn’t play again until September.

“I want to thank Steve for his tremendous service over the past two years,” Ten Hag said in a statement announcing McClaren’s resignation.
