I don’t think Arteta will finish in the top four the following season until he signs these two players if he is truly determined to contend for the league title. Antonio Conte informs Arteta that in order to challenge Guardiola for the Premier League title, he must make the key signing this season.

As the negotiations go towards their conclusion, Arsenal and Real Sociedad are getting very close to finalising Mikel Merino’s deal.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal and Real Sociedad’s 28-year-old midfielder Mikel Merino are getting close to a €30 million deal, with negotiations now reaching their conclusion and an agreement now “really, really close.”

Mikel Arteta, who has been keeping a close eye on the youngster prior to this summer’s attempt and knows him well, is said to be the driving factor behind the move.

Romano said that the board and scouting department also think Merino is ideal for Arsenal, indicating that everyone at the club seems to be in agreement on this one.

It was reported earlier this week that Sociedad was expected to accept Arsenal’s verbal offer of €30 million for Merino.

A personal deal has also been reached, and the player is eager to join Arsenal and play in the Premier League once more. He spent a season playing in the division with Newcastle United in the past.

If all proceeds according to plan, the paperwork for signature should be sent by the end of the week, following the completion of the payment schedule and add-ons.

Merino has been on vacation for the past few weeks after spending the summer with Spain at Euro 2024, where they emerged victorious.

On Monday, August 5, the midfielder’s break will formally come to an end. By then, Arsenal should ideally have finalised a deal so he can reunite with his new teammates rather than going back to Sociedad.

After bringing in David Raya from Brentford, Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, and teenage goalkeepers Tommy Setford and Lucas Nygaard thus far, Merino would be Arsenal’s sixth summer addition.
