Manchester United is looking to add a defensive midfielder to their lineup and is actively weighing their possibilities.

Manuel Ugarte of Paris Saint-Germain appears to be the club’s top target, but Sofyan Amrabat is reportedly waiting for a reunion, according to Corriere dello Sport (page 16).

The Fiorentina midfielder played for the Red Devils on loan during the most recent season, but the team chose not to exercise their £17 million option to buy him.

Amrabat says he is “confidently waiting” for United to take action, but as of right now, there’s no sign that they will become interested in hiring him again.

After an initial £8.4 million proposal, Fiorentina boss Jose Mourinho is adamant about signing Amrabat; nonetheless, the Moroccan hopes the Premier League doors will reopen shortly.

Given Ugarte’s interest, United is unlikely to return for Amrabat.
Amrabat, who joined the Red Devils last summer with a lot of excitement, has been called “world-class” by Morocco boss Walid Regragui. He did not live up to the hype.

The 27-year-old found it difficult to adjust to the Premier League’s increased intensity. Although he had a strong season-ending month, the hierarchy might not be persuaded.

Despite their mutual fondness from their days at Utrecht, United boss Erik ten Hag is unlikely to sign two defensive midfielders in the same transfer window.

Ugarte is United’s top target, and with PSG’s agreement to purchase Joao Neves from Benfica, it was recently speculated that he would be available on loan with a hefty buy option.

Last summer, the Red Devils paid a hefty £8.4 million loan fee to acquire Amrabat. They may offer a comparable deal to pursue Ugarte’s services. When it comes to defence, he is far superior to the Fiorentina ace.

Bringing in Ugarte on a season-long loan before Amrabat seems like a no-brainer. This summer, the Moroccan star might yet join a new team in the Premier League.
