Cole Palmer reveals Pep Guardiola discussions as controversial Chelsea transfer decision explained
Among the under-21 players in the top five leagues in Europe this season, only Jude Bellingham has made as many direct contributions to goals and assists as Cole Palmer.
Cole Palmer gave an explanation for his decision to join Chelsea and leave Manchester City. Notwithstanding his team’s encouraging start to the season, the 21-year-old midfielder chose to play at Stamford Bridge instead of Etihad Stadium in the final hours of the summer transfer window for Pep Guardiola’s team.
Palmer scored a goal in every City match and was an important member of the team in both the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup. On the first weekend of the Premier League season, he was left off the starting lineup despite his strong performances, one of which earned his boyhood club a trophy.
Against Burnley, the young player was limited to a 10-minute cameo. After failing to make an impact as a substitute in City’s next two games, Palmer made the decision to join Chelsea in an attempt to play for the first team, and he hasn’t looked back.
This season, he has made 23 appearances for the Blues in the English Premier League, tallying 11 goals and dishing out eight assists. Palmer has been a bright spot for Chelsea despite some unsatisfactory performances, winning two senior caps for England.
The midfield player was questioned about his choice to sign with the west London team during his appearance on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football program. Palmer stated: “I came because I felt like I was ready to play football every day of the week.
“I just wanted to showcase my ability week in, week out and thankfully it’s coming off,” he stated. “I had a really hard time deciding to move and leave City. It’s all I’ve known since I moved there when I was six years old. I was, however, prepared to play football. I had a conversation with my family and the club before traveling to Chelsea.”
Chelsea has had difficulty finishing in the top half of the Premier League despite making large summer investments. Palmer was asked about the wealth of talent in west London, as he was one of the many new faces at Stamford Bridge.
The former City star declared, “I think Chelsea has so much talent.” “The way the manager works us on the pitch and the things he does with us, it’s only going to get better. The fans and you guys don’t see it.
“I’m confident that we will see it sooner rather than later because it’s a project and everyone is still young, even if it’s not in the next season. We still have a chance to win the FA Cup and return to Wembley if we triumph on Sunday. We’ll take each league match as it comes, work our way up the standings, and see where we end up.”
