Michael Edwards, the former sporting director of Liverpool, has rejoined the team and has been given the responsibility of growing Fenway Sports Group’s football operations with another team.

According to Michael Edwards, Fenway Sports Group, the owners of Liverpool, intends to purchase a new football team.

After serving as sporting director for ten years, Edwards left the position in 2022 and has since rejoined the Reds. A number of reports state that he had rejected FSG.

After meeting with president Michael Gordon and owner John W. Henry in Boston last week, the 44-year-old’s perspective on returning to manage their football operations was altered.

And as he clarified in the announcement of his appointment, the promise of expansion beyond Liverpool was crucial in persuading him.

“One of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club, growing this area of their organisation,” Edwards said.

“I think that in order to stay competitive, the current football portfolio needs to be expanded and invested in. I will be in charge of Liverpool FC’s necessary football operations reinforcement, as several critical leadership positions require immediate attention.”

For now, Edwards’ primary focus is on securing a replacement for the position he used to hold. In the two years that have passed, Julian Ward and Jorg Schmadtke, his successors, have both come and gone.

Richard Hughes, who managed transfers at Bournemouth and won the FA Cup with Portsmouth when he was a player, is expected to be the selected one.

His focus will shift to other issues after the boardroom restructuring at Anfield is finished, as FSG looks to emulate the actions of City Football Group, the owners of Manchester City, who have purchased 13 clubs in the previous 15 years.

Where in the world that search will be conducted is still unknown. In other sports, FSG already owns RFK Racing, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Boston Red Sox.
