Darwin Nunez in trouble as Liverpool staff ‘instructed’ to get three deals over the line

Given rumours that Liverpool wants to add a few offensive players this summer, Darwin Nunez may be let go sooner rather than later.

With Liverpool lining up three big deals, Darwin Nunez’s future at the club is in doubt.

The 25-year-old Uruguayan has hardly impressed since joining the Reds from Benfica two years ago, with the exception of the occasional flash of brilliance. Since then, he has scored 33 goals in 96 appearances, which isn’t bad, but since Liverpool spent £64 million (with the possibility of a further £85 million) on him, it is understandable that some have questioned the club’s long-term faith in him.

Although Arne Slot has not yet made his first signing as Liverpool’s manager, a £51.7 million transfer for Martin Zubimendi, a midfielder for Real Sociedad, is supposedly in the works. Additionally, it’s understood that the club’s recruitment office has been given the go-ahead to search for attacking options; Mohammed Kudus, Nico Williams, and Anthony Gordon are just a few of the names connected to Anfield moves.

Nunez’s spot in the team could be seriously jeopardised if Liverpool decides to bring in two strikers this summer, as reported by the Independent.

Still, there are encouraging hints. Nunez outscored the starting centre forwards for Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham with 18 goals in all competitions last year (up from 15 in 2022–2023). In addition, he recorded 13 assists, up from 4 in 2022–2023.

Earlier in the transfer season, Liverpool and Newcastle were in talks regarding a transfer for Anthony Gordon. However, the talks broke down when the Magpies demanded that Reds defender Jarell Quansah travel the opposite way as part of the deal. Still, there’s a chance the agreement will be revived.

In other news, the Merseyside club is thinking about Salah’s contract issue (which expires in 2025). In anticipation of his departure, they may sign a replacement for the Egyptian before the transfer window closes.
