Marcus Rashford missed a golden chance at Wembley

During Manchester United’s Community Shield loss, Marcus Rashford erred in front of goal, but Erik ten Hag is unconcerned about the striker’s mental state.

Erik ten Hag insists Marcus Rashford won’t have a confidence problem and that he will thrive if he scores. Rashford plays for Manchester United.

The Red Devils’ leading star is hoping to get back to his best self following an unsatisfactory year in which he frequently shown a lack of confidence. After his first 30-goal season, Rashford only scored eight goals, and he continued to struggle in front of goal in the Community Shield.

In the closing moments of the match, Rashford found himself one-on-one with Ederson, but his attempt cannoned off the post, leaving the England striker with his head in his hands.

Ten Hag brushed off concerns about lack of confidence, believing that eventually the goals would materialise: “No. He was in a good position on multiple occasions, which makes me happy. He will continue to create such opportunities and score goals. He has the necessary experience to handle this, and if he scores one, the goals will follow.

Under Ten Hag, Rashford’s place in the front three is by no means assured, particularly with the addition of Joshua Zirkzee. The Dutchman is expected to fight for a starting role right away, and Jadon Sancho is also back in the mix following his loan stint overseas last season.

Last season, Rasmus Hojlund was a dominant No. 9 player, but he will be out for several months. Not only is Alejandro Garnacho still a bright spark, but Amad Diallo is back in Manchester and looking to make a name for himself at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag had praised Rashford’s preseason and supported him to get back to his best form before the Community Shield. “We are aware of the reality. He is putting in a lot of effort, doing a great job, being involved, ambitious, and driven to have a successful season,” he remarked.

Erik ten Hag doesn’t have concerns over his striker’s confidence

Only a few months prior, United had upset the odds to win the FA Cup by defeating City in their previous meeting. That made up for an eighth-place Premier League result, but Ten Hag believes they can compete with the best if their roster is totally healthy.

“We had a competitive team and we worked hard,” he stated. That is our collective obligation. The initial responsibility is for the players to be available, after which it is the staff’s responsibility to work with, support, and keep the players fit. We have a really strong squad when players are available.”
