Conte’s Juventus return starts with boos, ends in draw

Antonio Conte’s return to Juventus and into a packed stadium started with jeers for the former Bianconeri hero.

It ended 0-0 between Juventus and Conte’s Napoli, which created the better chances on Saturday in Turin.

Napoli coach Antonio Conte applauded Juventus fans while walking towards the away end at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday after a 0-0 draw against the Bianconeri.

Conte faced the Allianz Stadium crowd for the first time as an opponent today, as the previous three games in charge of Inter had been played behind closed doors during the COVID pandemic.

Like any other opponent, he and Napoli were booed when the stadium’s announcer read the line-ups before kick-off, but Juventus fans ignored Conte throughout the game.

There was no chant against the Italian tactician, and the former midfielder saluted his former fans after the match.

Conte kindly clapped at Juventus supporters while walking towards the away end at the Allianz Stadium, where circa 1,000 Napoli fans were waiting for him. The coach continued walking around the pitch afterwards, receiving a new round of applause from most Juventus supporters.

However, the Italian tactician wisely avoided going under Juventus ultras in Curva Sud before entering the tunnel.

Conte, 55, played 420 games at Juventus as a footballer, winning five Serie A titles and a Champions League. He also won three Scudetti as a coach from 2011 until 2014.

Well, I guess the good part in all of this is that Juventus, while they are struggling to score against their last three Italian opponents, aren’t exactly allowing anything, either.

So there’s that.

But the problem is, for the third straight Serie A weekend, Thiago Motta’s squad has failed to do much of anything in front of goal. First it was Roma before the international break, then it was Empoli coming out of the international break, and now it’s another night to forget in attack, this time coming Saturday night in a scoreless draw against Napoli and old “buddy” Antonio Conte. It didn’t really matter how much possession Juventus had — and especially in the second half, which was a lot of it — the chances were truly few and far between no matter who was in goal for Napoli on this day.

And because of it, even with another clean sheet in Serie A, Juventus dropped more points — now six in the last few weeks — in what was another very winnable game.

That’s not to downplay the horrendous non-call on what was a Napoli back pass in the penalty area that would have given Juventus an indirect free kick and potentially the lead. (Although, with no Dusan Vlahovic on the field in the second half, it would have been interesting to see who stepped up to take it. Probably Teun Koopmeiners, right?) It was a terrible blunder from a referee that seemed to not totally have control of the proceedings as things went on.
