Leeds United continued their solid start to the 2024/25 Championship season with a dominant 3-0 win against Coventry City at Elland Road on Saturday.

Leeds United were looking to build on the back of a dominant display against Cardiff City last time out. The Whites’ display against Mark Robins’ Coventry City in front of another sell-out Elland Road crowd was even more impressive.

It was a first half where the Sky Blues never really got a look in. Leeds United were pressing hard as they harried a flustered City every time they had the ball.

The visitors were already creaking when Wilfried Gnonto (16′) fired Leeds ahead. Junior Firpo played the ball into the area after a nice move on the left flank and Gnonto opened his body up to side-foot an unstoppable shot past Ben Wilson.

Chances came thick and fast in a first-half display from Daniel Farke’s side that was one of their most dominant opening 45s of the campaign. Across the half, Leeds United had 10 shots to 0 from Coventry City and the home side had 62% of the ball.

The second half saw a more determined Coventry City outfit take to the field, but it only took the hosts four minutes for them to double their lead. Jayden Bogle (49′) opened his account for the Whites after a sumptuous pass from Largie Ramazani.

Coventry City redoubled their efforts, but they were chasing a game that had run away from them over the opening 45-or-so minutes. Despite having most of the second-half ball (66%) and more shots (7-to-3), Leeds were in the ascendency.

A dominant display from Farke’s men was topped off by a third goal of the campaign from super-sub Joel Piroe. The Dutchman (79′) turned in a ball from star attacker Gnonto.

Ramazani impresses yet again for Farke’s Leeds United

In a display where it was hard to pick a ‘bad’ performance for a very good Leeds United side, one stood out for Yorkshire Evening Post reporter, Graham Smyth.

That player was summer signing Largie Ramazani. He was amongst several players given an 8/10 rating from Smyth for his efforts against a somewhat shellshocked Coventry City outfit.

Smyth had this to say about the diminutive left-winger’s performance against the Sky Blues:

“Picked up a lovely assist for Bogle’s goal. Worked hard, pressed, fought to win the ball and carried a threat for most of his appearance. Ran out of steam a little before coming off with just over 20 left.”

The Summerville replacement

In a hard-working display that caught the eye at times, Ramazani looked increasingly like the zippy replacement Leeds United need for Crysencio Summerville. His pace was always an issue for Mark Robins’ men to handle.

As per WhoScored’s match data, Ramazani put up some impressive numbers numbers. Whilst low in accuracy (61%) with his passing, 23-year-old Ramazani hurt Coventry when it mattered. Across the game, until his substitution, Ramazani made three key passes that set up chances for teammates.

He also completed one dribble, but his overall contribution was more than just collecting a series of isolated numbers and statistics. His running off the ball and his dragging defenders out of position was a joy to behold at times.
