Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain face off at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening in a battle of the behemoths as they continue to chase the Champions League championship.
While the Gunners were fortunate to draw with Atalanta BC on matchday one, their opponents were also celebrating a 1-0 win over La Liga surprise package Girona.

When David Raya jumped into action – literally – to stop Ollie Watkins’ close-range header against Aston Villa, the Arsenal goalkeeper had undoubtedly made the finest save of the season, if not his whole career.

However, only a few weeks later, the ex-Brentford man outdid himself in Bergamo, delivering a fantastic double save from Mateo Retegui’s penalty and follow-up to keep the Europa League champions at bay in a goalless draw in which Arsenal badly missed their creator-in-chief Martin Odegaard.

Keeping a clean sheet against a squad that annihilated Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen last season was no easy task, and while Arsenal is the highest-ranked team with one point in 16th position, the nascent Champions League standings matter little at this juncture.

Raya was powerless to stop two efforts from Leicester City’s James Justin at the weekend, but Arsenal produced another bedlam-inducing late show to win 4-2 over the Foxes and draw level on points with Rodri-less Manchester City in the Premier League standings, as the prospect of another thrilling title race grows by the week.

Arsenal, who have yet to lose in any competition this season and have scored 11 goals in their last three games against Leicester, Bolton Wanderers, and Manchester City, are hoping that their recent success in front of goal will help them avoid setting an unwanted club record; they have failed to score in their last two Champions League games but have never drawn blanks three times in a row.

On matchday one, Arteta’s former club PSG appeared to face the same fate as their prospective hosts, as no matter how much they pushed and puffed against a depleted Girona backline, last season’s third-placed La Liga finishers remained firm at the Parc des Princes.

However, just as the clock struck 90, Nuno Mendes’ pass slipped past the body of ex-Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, who slumped in anguish as his awful blunder handed PSG all three points.

Luis Enrique’s side did not ride their luck on Friday evening, however, as they defeated Rennes 3-1 to make it five victories from their first six Ligue 1 games of the season, with the electric Bradley Barcola scoring his fifth and sixth goals of the season.

Les Parisiens, who lead Monaco on goal difference at the top of the Ligue 1 rankings, have some European wrongs to right at the Emirates, since last year’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United was their third consecutive Champions League loss away to an English team.

Arsenal and PSG will face off again on Tuesday, eight years after their clashes in the 2016-17 group stage, both of which ended level, but the Gunners defeated their French counterparts 2-1 on aggregate in the 1993-94 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals on their way to their first and only European trophy.

Odegaard (ankle), Mikel Merino (shoulder), Oleksandr Zinchenko (calf), Kieran Tierney (hamstring), and Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee) will all miss Tuesday’s game, though Merino may be able to return for the weekend’s Premier League match against Southampton.

Arteta is also concerned about the fitness of the reliable Ben White, who has missed the Gunners’ previous two games due to a knee injury, so Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber, who have just recently recovered from their own ailments, will not have much rest out wide.

Bukayo Saka’s unparalleled record of setting up a goal in each of his first six Premier League outings this season was broken after Arsenal’s third goal against Leicester was ruled an own goal by Wilfred Ndidi. However, the Englishman has directly contributed to seven goals in five Champions League games at the Emirates, the most by any Arsenal player in their first five home games in the competition.

Arteta and Enrique may relate to the French champions’ injury woes, since they also have a number of long-term absentees in their ranks, including Goncalo Ramos (ankle), Lucas Hernandez (knee), and Presnel Kimpembe (Achilles).

However, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Vitinha, Marco Asensio, Desire Doue, and Nuno Mendes have all joined the squad due to personal issues, albeit only the former and latter may be considered for the starting XI.

because Randal Kolo Muani wasted a chance against Girona, Lee Kang-in played up front and scored PSG’s second against Rennes, but both men should now start together up front because Ousmane Dembele was withdrawn from the team, supposedly owing to a squabble with Enrique.

Arsenal’s likely starting lineup: Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Havertz, Partey, Rice; Saka, Trossard, Martinelli.

Possible starting lineup for Paris Saint-Germain includes Donnarumma, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Ruiz, Neves, Zaire-Emery; Lee, Kolo Muani, and Barcola.
