Manchester United great Paul Scholes has slammed another new acquisition while criticizing the club’s transfer strategy this summer.

The former United midfielder recently appeared on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, and it’s safe to assume he’s not impressed with his old club’s recruiting philosophy or recent performances.

Scholes, who has 11 Premier League titles to his name, left United in 2013 after winning his latest trophy in a surprise return from his previous retirement in 2011.

He plays with Salford City in League One, as do numerous of his old colleagues. After retiring, he attempted to enter management with Oldham Athletic in March 2019, but lasted only 31 days.

Despite this, he has been forthright in his evaluation of United’s recruiting approach, following a summer splurge of more than £175 million on Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Manuel Ugarte, and Leny Yoro.

He discussed transfers on The Overlap, stating, “Coaches are control freaks; they want to handle everything. If you were [assistant coach] Ruud [van Nistelrooy] witnessing that, he could be thinking, ‘I will take a back seat, I don’t want to get involved.'”

Van Nistelrooy is regarded to be the dressing room’s preferred manager if Ten Hag leaves Old Trafford, and Scholes feels the Dutch striker would not have signed Zirkzee if he had the option.

“He also has to be engaged in the recruitment process, namely signing a centre forward. Or two center forwards. ‘Ruud, who do you believe?’ “I’m not sure he would have chosen Zirkzee,” Scholes continued.

Earlier this season, Scholes criticized defender De Ligt, saying: “When you bring players in, you want them to be a lot better than those you currently have.

“I don’t see any players coming in who can make a significant difference. De Ligt has replaced [Harry] Maguire, let’s say, but there’s no major change.”
