Bruno Fernandes’ red card during Manchester United’s tumultuous 3-3 draw with Porto on Thursday cannot be overturned. The 30-year-old was booked in the first half and was shown his second yellow card for a high boot on defender Nehuen Perez in the 81st minute.

Fernandes will be available for United’s Premier League trip to Aston Villa on Sunday, as his sending off occurred in the Europa League and was not considered a “serious offence.” Instead, he will serve a one-match suspension in their next UEFA club competition fixture. This implies that the Portuguese player won’t be available for Fenerbahce’s match against Jose Mourinho’s team later this month.

Fernandes received his marching orders during Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Tottenham. But after the FA verified that the red card had been revoked, United appealed the ruling and prevailed. “After a successful wrongful dismissal claim, Bruno Fernandes will be available for Man Utd’s next three games,” the statement said. The midfield player was sent from the Premier League match against Tottenham due to severe foul play.

There have been some doubts about United’s ability to appeal Fernandes’ dismissal after the draw with Porto, similar to his sending off against Tottenham. Nevertheless, United cannot challenge the ruling because he received two yellow cards rather than a single red one, and his one-match punishment will remain in effect regardless of how severe it is found to be.

Harry Maguire’s header in stoppage time helped United salvage a late draw after being reduced to 10 men with nine minutes remaining.

At Estadio do Dragao, United got off to an ideal start as goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund eased them into a 2-0 lead. They gave up that lead, though, as Porto turned the tide of the match by having Pepe Aquino draw one back before Samu Omorodion scored twice to put them ahead.

When Fernandes was sent off in the 81st minute, everything looked to be falling apart, but Maguire’s last-minute equalizer kept everything together. Ten Hag remarked following the game, “We started the game very good, we dominated, scored two good goals, but then we lost control.”

“So we had a strong beginning, a poor middle section, and a strong conclusion. Since it’s a difficult location to visit, our victory over 3-2 in the shootout is encouraging. Once again, the team demonstrates incredible grit, but we still need to work on our middle defense.”
