He is no longer my captain going forward. In my entire coaching experience, I have never handled a captain with this kind of mentality. Bruno Fernandez’s captaincy has finally been taken away by Erik Ten Hag, who has given it to a £60 million Man United player.

Erik ten Hag’s team has had a really tough few weeks, and as a result, Manchester United has had some unpleasant outcomes.

After one loss and three draws in their previous four games across all competitions, the Red Devils have not triumphed in any of them.

Although the team has lost two Europa League games against FC Twente and Porto despite leading in both of those matches, the streak may not appear as bad as many have made it out to be.

The loss to Tottenham Hotspur was a severe setback, as Ten Hag’s team was outmatched at Old Trafford by Ange Postecoglou’s team, marking their third straight league loss in 2024–25.

One player in particular disappointed during the loss and gave an equally awful performance earlier in the week in the Europa League.

The numbers of Bruno Fernandes against Porto
Midfielder Bruno Fernandes entered the match in his own country with a point to prove and make up for his ejection at Old Trafford following his sending off against Spurs the previous weekend.

Even if the Premier League tribunal overturned his red card, he would have surely been thinking about it leading up to the Europa League match.

But Fernandes did not perform well for Ten Hag’s team in a game of redemption, frequently seeming sloppy and wasteful in possession.

The 30-year-old was unable to swing the game in the Red Devils’ favor, managing just 67 touches in the match while dropping six duels and giving up possession ten times.

Late in the game, Fernandes received a second yellow card for a high boot, adding to his misery and making history by seeing red for the second time in as many games.

It’s safe to say that he hasn’t been acting like a club captain in recent games, and his leadership qualities may be called into question. This might mean that one player steps up to assume the captaincy soon.

After the club spent £47 million to sign him last summer, the man who may succeed Fernandes as United’s captain, André Onana, had a difficult first few months at Old Trafford, casting doubt on his arrival.

Last October, pundit Chris Sutton was among many criticizing the former Inter Milan player, implying that he was a “downgrade” from David De Gea. It took the goalie six months to “feel good” in Manchester, he himself said.

But he’s quickly turned things around, putting on a number of magical performances so far this season, including a terrific double stop against Crystal Palace and a masterful penalty save away at Southampton that earned Ten Hag’s team a crucial point.
