Paul Scholes slams Man Utd for ‘relying on hope’ in furious blast at five players

Manchester United’s losing streak has now reached five games, with club icon Paul Scholes launching a scathing blast at their recruiting policy following their draw with Aston Villa.

Paul Scholes has targeted Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Lisandro Martinez, and Matthijs de Ligt as Manchester United’s losing streak reaches five games.

The Red Devils drew 0-0 with Ason Villa on Sunday, dropping to 14th position in the Premier League rankings. Their dismal performance came despite another summer of big investment as the club supported manager Erik ten Hag.

Zirkzee, De Ligt, Ugarte, Leny Yoro, and Noussair Mazraoui all visited Old Trafford during the window. However, Scholes doubts that any of the first three will have a good influence on the Red Devils.

He also questioned the responsibilities of Hojlund and Martinez, both of whom were signed after Ten Hag came. The United icon accused the present administration of’relying on hope’ to achieve success.”I don’t think the quality is there, especially in the forward areas. We return to the most successful teams, which are capable of scoring goals. What was our score? Scholes informed SuperSport that he scored five goals in seven games.

“Now, we had three or four attackers that could score 20 goals each, so you’re looking at 80 goals every season, which I don’t see in Manchester United’s forward line. Look, Hojlund does well, but will he score you 20 goals? I do not think so.

“Zirkzee…what is he?” Is he ranked No. 9 or No. 10? Is he going to get you twenty goals? I do not think so. I believe they are depending on hope rather than actual demonstrated quality, and they have also invested a significant amount of money.

“It’s a ludicrous amount of money, and some of them can’t join the squad! Despite Ugarte’s potential to improve the midfield, he was not utilized.De Ligt cost £50 million, and he did not play him. Jonny Evans has replaced him at the age of 36. Martinez and Ten Hag got him into the club. What is he thinking now? Jonny Evans is playing; Maguire began, and [Victor] Lindelof came on before him. “It’s just a recruitment mess.”

Scholes confessed that he believed United received what they deserved from their visit to Villa Park. But he provided a harsh assessment of the Red Devils’ recruitment technique in recent seasons.

“Choosing players is really tough when you don’t have a style of play, don’t know how to play, or what method you want to play. With Liverpool, the purchase process was straightforward; you know what you have to do. “They play 4-3-3, and you can recruit for that,” Scholes said.

“But when you don’t have a style of play, you don’t know how you’re going to play, and it changes from week to week, you’re essentially tossing balls in the air and saying, ‘He seems like a good player, we’ll try to get him.

“It’s a point for United, going to a difficult venue under a lot of pressure.” I never felt like they were there to win the game. It was more of a survival strategy than anything.

“But, as we mentioned before the game, United were a difficult team to play against today, especially given the midweek schedule. Villa received a significant boost from Bayern Munich’s victory in that game, as well as the lively atmosphere.

“They struggled to truly live up to that today. You could see they had suffered a little. It’s difficult for Manchester United to go to Europe on Thursday night, and it was a challenging game against Porto with ten men for parts of it, so I believe the game mirrored both teams’ midweeks.”
