Noussair Mazraoui and Harry Maguire injury latest after fresh Man Utd blow

Erik ten Hag is unclear of the seriousness of Harry Maguire’s injury, which forced the Manchester United centre-back and Noussair Mazraoui off during the goalless draw against Aston Villa.

On Sunday, Maguire and Jonny Evans returned to the starting lineup, but Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez were benched.

The two put up great performances at the back, but the former United captain was taken off before halftime after seeming to strain a muscle when defending a corner kick.

Maguire appeared to be in discomfort as he was assisted off the pitch by two United backroom staff members. He was replaced at the break by de Ligt, who came on for the second half.

Mazraoui, who has been a constant at right defense this season after joining from Bayern Munich in the summer, did not appear in the second period, with Victor Lindelof making his season debut.

‘We need to take them off at halftime. Tomorrow we’ll find out what the diagnosis is,’ ten Hag told BBC Sport.

In his post-match interview with MUTV, he added: “We have to assess this.” I can’t tell you what’s going on right now.

‘I know what the problem is, but [I can’t tell] how good or awful it is. We will analyze this tomorrow [Monday] and then report back to you.

With the international break started, United’s players will have time to rest and heal before returning to action on October 19 against Brentford.

Ten Hag will be hoping that Sunday’s stalemate in front of Sir Jim Ratcliffe would be enough to keep him in the job after his terrible performances against Tottenham and Porto last week.

‘We constantly talk. Every week, we talk,’ Ten Hag added.

We’re all on the same page. We understand what we are striving for.

‘This is a long-term effort, and we need to continually refining the process.

‘We had two really tough away games, and we showed unity and passion, but the players also showed their belief and faith.
