David Moyes has commended Erik ten Hag for his’resilience’ at Manchester United, claiming the under-fire Dutchman is doing a ‘great job’.

United are 14th in the Premier League following their worst start in history, and there is growing talk that Ten Hag is on his way out of Old Trafford.

Ten Hag was on the verge of being fired last season, but the 54-year-old earned himself a new contract by orchestrating an unexpected FA Cup final triumph against Manchester City in May.

However, it was widely known that INEOS had spoken with a number of management contenders before electing to stick with Ten Hag, including Gareth Southgate, Graham Potter, Kieran McKenna, and Massimiliano Allegri.

According to reports this week, former Chelsea and Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel has emerged as the favorite to succeed Ten Hag, with the German reportedly ‘open’ to the possibility of taking command.

Moyes, the former manager of Manchester United, understands the strains of the hot seat at the Theatre of Dreams, having been fired just 10 months after taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Moyes seemed to have immense empathy for Ten Hag’s present treatment, telling BBC Sport: I think he’s doing an excellent job.

‘I believe he’s showed incredible tenacity in the circumstance that he’s in, and I think he deserves credit for how well he’s carried himself.’

According to Moyes, Ten Hag deserves ‘great credit’ for continuing to stand up to the media under ‘immense pressure’ from virtually every side.

‘As far as I know, I don’t see him avoiding any questions or media interviews that you [the media] present to him,’ he continued.

‘I believe you have to give him a lot of credit for that, but it’s a role that will put a lot of pressure on him, and people will speak about it, so I have to say he’s doing an excellent job.’Following Sunday’s goalless draw with Aston Villa, Ten Hag said he still had the backing of United’s leadership. When asked if Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his advisors still supported him, Ten Hag said, ‘I don’t know what’s changed since they should have told me. We communicate extremely openly. It is really transparent.

‘We are all on the same page. We understand that what we are working on is a long-term process. I constantly communicate with them.

‘After the game, I have to do my job, which includes talking to the players, managing them, and responding to media inquiries.

‘But we chat every week. I would say we chat every day, so I anticipate to speak with them.’
