George Baldock found dead in pool after wife back in England raised the alarm

Former Premier League defender George Baldock has tragically gone unexpectedly at the age of 31 in Greece, only months after moving overseas to join Panathinaikos this summer.

George Baldock was discovered dead in a swimming pool by the owner of his Greek home after his wife was unable to reach him, according to local sources.

On Wednesday night, it was reported that the former Sheffield United defender had sadly died at the age of 31. Emergency services were brought to the site, and a doctor from the reaction unit confirmed his death.

 

Baldock, a Greece international, went to Panathinaikos in the summer after formerly residing in Glyfada, a town south of Athens.

 

He was allegedly discovered in the community pool when the owner of his villa checked the premises. The response unit believes he was in the water for several hours based on the photographs they saw.Baldock’s bereaved family expressed “shock” at the terrible news of his unexpected death on Wednesday night. “We regret to inform you that George has died away. As a family, we are devastated by this tragic loss. We kindly request that the media respect our privacy at this time.”

 

“We are shocked, we are shocked by the loss of our George,” Panathinaikos said, adding that the Panathinaikos family mourns his early demise. We join the family and loved ones of George Baldock.”

 

His previous team, Sheffield United, also paid homage following the heartbreaking news. They commented, “Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the death of former player George Baldock.” The defender departed the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was well-liked by fans, staff, and teammates who wore red and white shirts with him.Everyone at Sheffield United sends heartfelt sympathies to George’s family and friends.

 

Baldock earned 12 caps for Greece, qualifying via his grandmother. He played in all five of England’s major divisions for clubs such as the Blades, Oxford United, and MK Dons. On Sunday, he played for Panathinaikos against Olympiacos.

 

Greece faces England in a Nations League match at Wembley Stadium on Thursday night. Baldock was not included in the most recent team due to injury, however the Greek Football Federation has requested that black armbands be worn in his remembrance.They also issued a statement expressing their grief at Baldock’s passing and extending their condolences to his family. The statement read: “With deep grief and sorrow, the national team and the Greek Football Federation bid farewell to George Baldock.

 

“There are no words to express the profound anguish created by the sudden death of one of our own young men. The occasion requires stillness. Our condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family.

 

England also issued a statement on the eve of the match, which read: “We’re very grieved by the death of George Baldock. George was close to several of our players and represented Greece, our opponent on Thursday night. We are thinking about George’s family, friends, and club and country teammates during this terrible time.”Other important football stars paid tribute to Baldock on social media. His former Sheffield United teammate Harry Maguire was among the first to react, posting a photo of Baldock with a broken heart emoji and the words “RIP.”

 

A statement issued by the Greek Super League continued: “The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

 

Baldock began his career with MK Dons, who paid him a heartfelt homage and sent a message of support to his elder brother, Sam, who also played for the club.”We are deeply devastated and saddened to learn about the shocking news of former Academy graduate and MK Dons player, George Baldock,” the club’s statement said.

 

“George began his career with Stadium MK, where he progressed through the junior ranks and made his professional debut before rising to the Premier League in subsequent years.

 

“Everyone at MK Dons has a tremendous fondness for George, Sam, and the Baldock family, and we would want to express our heartfelt sympathies during these difficult times. “George, you will always be one of our own.”
