Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker-Peters have both paid homage to George Baldock, the former Sheffield United defender who was allegedly discovered dead in Greece, aged 31.

Harry Maguire has led the tributes to George Baldock, who was apparently discovered dead in Greece at the age of 31.

The Panathinaikos defender had recently started playing in the Greek Super League and represented Greece internationally. He departed Sheffield United in the summer, the club where Maguire started his career.

 

The Manchester United and England defender shared a photo of Baldock on his Instagram story, along with the broken heart emoji. Concerns were allegedly raised after Baldock’s wife was unable to contact him after many hours without receiving a response.

 

Baldock was apparently discovered in his villa’s pool, and emergency personnel were dispatched, along with a doctor from the reaction unit, who confirmed his unfortunate death.Sheffield United praised the “extremely popular” Baldock. The defender left the Blades in the summer following a great spell in Yorkshire, where he helped the team achieve numerous promotions. Baldock was with the Sheffield squad that twice earned promotion to the Premier League.

 

They wrote on social media: “Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and very saddened to learn of the death of former player George Baldock. The defender departed the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was well-liked by fans, staff, and teammates who wore red and white shirts with him. Everyone at Sheffield United sends heartfelt sympathies to George’s family and friends.

 

Kyle Walker-Peters was another player who paid respect to Baldock. The two were friends and had previously vacationed together in the summer. He uploaded a photo of the defender with the caption: “Horrible news. “RIP, George.”Northampton Town, one of his former teams, also paid homage to the defender, whom they had on loan when he originally started his career.

 

They stated, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragically young death of former loanee George Baldock at the age of 31.” George made five games on loan from MK Dons in 2011, before going on to play for Oxford and Sheff United.Sending our heartfelt sympathies to George’s family and friends.”

 

The PFA has also remarked on the terrible death of the former Premier League defender. They underlined how the reaction to his death demonstrated how beloved he was in the football world.

 

They stated, “Everyone at the PFA is very grieved by the demise of George Baldock. The instant reactions to George’s tragically early death demonstrate how much he was liked and revered by teammates, fans, and many others around the game. Our sympathies are with George’s family and many friends, both in football and beyond.”
