Former Liverpool player Jason McAteer has described Bruno Fernandes as “petulant” and lacking the maturity to manage the responsibility of captaining Manchester United.

Bruno Fernandes has been labelled “petulant” and lacking maturity in a scathing assault on the Manchester United captain.

Former Liverpool great Jason McAteer believes Fernandes has been a massive disappointment this season and is too immature to wear the United captain’s armband. Fernandes, who has failed to score this season, had a red card reversed against Tottenham, but was sent off for two yellow cards in United’s following game away to Porto.

“I think Bruno Fernandes is a fantastic talent, he’s just in the wrong environment,” McAteer said. “I want to see more of him and his maturity. Manchester United is in upheaval right now, and you need your captain to show great leadership in these conditions. He’s a real brat. He ought to be setting an example. The United team has a number of exceptionally talented young players.

“Bruno Fernandes needs to set an example, and being sent off in consecutive games is not the way to do that. Manchester United has had a particularly rough era.

“They’ve had a terrible start to the season.” I’m quite upset with Bruno Fernandes’ performance in games and his behavior.

“That is not how a Manchester United captain should demonstrate his abilities or behave. His attitude and performances, given his position at Manchester United, have been the most disappointing for me in the Premier League this season.”McAteer, speaking to Gambling Zone, also chastised United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe for avoiding a question regarding manager Erik ten Hag’s future.

Dodging the issue, according to McAteer, demonstrated a lack of leadership from the billionaire businessman who has taken over football operations at United.

“I thought that Jim Ratcliffe’s comments, or non-comments, on Erik ten Hag’s future were interesting,” McAteer told me.”He avoided making a remark about his management. Okay, it’s a challenging question to ask if you support the present manager, but his reaction wasn’t what Manchester United supporters were looking for.

“United supporters want to hear from their leader. They want to be certain that Jim Ratcliffe is steering the club in the correct way, and they want leadership in the current situation.

“He stated, ‘This is not my decision,’ but ultimately it is your decision. He is at the head of the company, therefore his refusal to answer the question was disheartening.
