Paul Merson tells Man Utd to put Gary Neville in charge to fix Erik ten Hag mess

Manchester United’s transfer dealings in recent seasons has been questioned, and Paul Merson feels that former United captain Gary Neville may play a role at the club.
Paul Merson believes Gary Neville should have been in charge of Manchester United’s recruiting following the failures of prior transfer windows.
With doubts surrounding United manager Erik ten Hag’s future following a bad start to the season, the former Arsenal attacker underlined the Dutchman’s off-field failings. Under Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Red Devils put a new recruitment team in charge of their most recent summer of business, with Dan Ashworth named sports director, Jason Wilcox as technical director, and Omar Berrada as chief executive.
The club made significant investments upon their arrival, but results have yet to improve. United’s newest additions have had mixed outcomes thus far.
Merson was particularly scathing of a previous signing, Antony from Ajax. However, the commentator acknowledged that the team must now work patiently to reclaim its place among football’s elite.”Manchester United will not catch up to Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool in the next year,” Merson told Sky Sports. “You can’t spend £500 million on players now. That cannot happen, therefore they must be patient. The only way to be patient is to have a plan.
“The strategy will take time. Man United must walk before they can run. And they certainly can’t begin sprinting yet. This is what everyone believes. The one thing that concerns me the most is who has entered that club that they have purchased and you have thought ‘he’s an unbelievable success’? I mean, Antony was worth around £80 million. That sums it up.”
“I would have put someone like Gary Neville in charge of the recruitment,” Mr. Merson said. “Gary has been with that team his whole career, and he understands football inside and out.”You put someone like him in charge, or Rio Ferdinand, someone like that or even both of them together, and you go ‘right, we want to build this club- what players should we be bringing in?'”
“The players they’re bringing in. I keep going back, £80 million, who approved that? I watched him in Holland: he goes down the wing, cuts in, and bends it in the far corner. He did it every week in Holland. When you arrive in the Premier League, you’ll notice that every single fullback is an international. “They work you out.”
